Updated at: 0813 PST, Thursday, August 11, 2011
PESHAWAR: At least five people including a child was killed while 17 others sustained injuries as a bomb exploded near police van in Peshawar, Geo News reported.

According to the sources, the incident took place in Lahori Gate area in the limits of Gulbahar police station; meanwhile police cordoned off the area and injured people were rushed to hospitals.

At least seven people have been killed in twin bombings in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar, police say.

In the first incident, four police officers and a child were killed when a remote-controlled bomb exploded near a police vehicle in the Lahori Gate area.

Later, a woman suicide bomber killed herself and another woman, possibly her companion, by detonating her jacket.

She was trying to target the police checkpoint about 400m from the spot where the police vehicle was hit.

Militant attacks in Pakistan have risen sharply since May, when US commandos killed al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

Since then, a paramilitary academy, a naval base, government buildings, a police station and a US consulate convoy have been attacked.

In the first attack on Thursday morning, the explosive device was hidden in a handcart parked at the roadside and detonated remotely when police approached, police officer Ijaz Khan told reporters.

Their vehicle was transporting over two dozen policemen from Kotwali police station in the eastern part of the city to the Police Lines near the city centre, he said.

The vehicle was wrecked in the blast and a group of schoolboys were at the site when the bomb exploded.

A 12-year-old boy was among those killed. At least 21 people, including 17 policemen, were injured in the blast.

In the second attack, police said the bomber appeared to be a woman about 16 or 17 years old. Her clothes suggested she could have been from the tribal region.

The other woman appeared to be over 50, they said.

The woman's explosives-laden jacket failed to detonate properly, reports said.

The BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad says the attacks are the first in Peshawar in recent weeks, and come a day after a deadly drone strike that killed at least 18 fighters of the Haqqani network in North Waziristan

PESHAWAR: Bombers killed up to six people on Thursday in the city of Peshawar, where a woman suicide attacker blew herself up and roadside explosives struck a police vehicle, officials said.

In the first deadly attacks in the Taliban-hit northwest since the start of the fasting month of Ramadan, a woman threw a hand grenade at a police check post, and then blew herself up, senior police official Shafqat Malik told AFP.

“Her vest did not explode completely. She was killed and another woman was also killed and three policemen were injured,” Malik said.

“It is unclear whether the other woman was also an attacker or just a passer-by. Around eight kilograms of explosive material and ball bearings were used in the suicide vest,” the police official said.

Women suicide attackers are extremely rare in Pakistan. The explosion struck just metres from the site of an earlier attack that killed four policemen and a child in the Lahori Gate area of Peshawar.

Pieces of shattered glass, human flesh, blood and police uniforms littered the area after the bomb, hidden in a handcart parked on the roadside, exploded.

“At least four policemen and a schoolchild have been killed in the attack,” said Muhammad Faisal, a senior police official in the area.

He said that 18 other policemen are injured.

“The police van was carrying 20 policemen,” said Imtiaz Shah, another police official, adding the vehicle was wrecked in the blast and a group of schoolboys were at the site when the bomb exploded.

“A 12-year-old boy has also been killed in the incident,” he said.

Witness Mohabbat Khan, 45, told AFP that volunteers helped police evacuate the casualties after the attack.

“I was at home when I heard the blast. I came out and there were clouds of smoke. Then I saw the dead bodies and injured policemen. I shifted them to a police vehicle which reached at the site soon after the blast,” he said.

Northwest Pakistan suffers from chronic insecurity, largely connected to the semi-autonomous tribal belt near Afghanistan, which Washington calls the most dangerous place on Earth and a global headquarters of al Qaeda.

More than 4,500 people have been killed in suicide attacks and bomb explosions, many of them carried out by the Taliban and other al Qaeda-linked extremists, in Pakistan during the last four years.

Need a Gandhi.... Mahatma Gandhi... only peace can prevail peace... Eye for Eye will make all blind.

US should leave Central asia and concentrate on its economy... Each drone attack giving excuse to terrorists to kill civilians,...

And ruin India further with spinelessness? Look man, peace is fine but if you want peace, you must understand war. One cannot live without the other. That is how it is balanced in nature. Peace cannot exist without war and war cannot exist without peace. Japan and Afghanistan are two stark examples of opposites here.

Sorry but we had enough of Gandhi nonsense. We need a Sardar Patel now-- an iron man. Not a weakling preaching weakness.

And we don't need your mumbling on India in this thread.

R.I.P to the fallen.
Heartbreaking to see also yet another child bite the dust in our country due to brainwashed people who will end up in the burning fires of the hell.
We are not allowed to take another person's life away. I do not understand why these suicide bombers don't get this.

The weak minded individuals who commit these crimes, well most of them die during their actions, but if we can somehow prevent and unfold their activities, so we can try and actually EDUCATE them.

It all goes back to the basics, proper education so people open their eyes and don't get influenced by Taliban/TTP ideology of justifying innocent killings in the name of Islam.

The U.S. presence on our puppet government is also a factor which hugely increased the number of suicide deaths.
Imagine if something similar had happened in the U.S. It would be WORLD NEWS, headlines everywhere.
Every news channel/station would be reporting constantly, live 24/7.

We'd see emotional speeches everywhere. But it happened in Pakistan, and since Pakistan is portrayed as a rogue state (by the U.S.) which harbors all "evil" of the world. It's not so big of an issue.

I cannot digest the fact that our people are getting killed, and our government continues to kiss the *** of America.
The U.S. doesn't give two sh-ts about this, they'll move on and continue their drone strikes. Like they give a f--k. As long as mainland America is safe and sound.

. . .
RIP to the dead .....i hope the people responsible rot in hell foe eternity of their souls
