Pakistan performed better than India in apparel exports to the United States in February 2021, Express Tribune reported on Wednesday.

Besides the United States, Pakistan posted an outstanding performance in the apparel export category to several global destinations during February 2021, a renowned source for textile sector information called ‘Sourcing Journal’ reported.

Speaking on this, the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce, Abdul Razak Dawood, told the media that Pakistan had been “the only main exporter with increased apparel supply to America during COVID-19”.

Another international textile information platform by Apparel Resources had also Pakistan on the top of the list of countries that export textiles. Historically, both India and Bangladesh have performed better than Pakistan in this segment but Pakistan has fared far better than its neighbors this year despite the challenges of the pandemic.

The total apparel imports by the US had fallen by 8.7 percent year-on-year to $5.39 billion in February 2021 but the volume had increased by 3.2 percent. Pakistan was on the top of the list of countries that were responsible for this hike in America’s apparel imports. The other countries that followed Pakistan on the list include China, Bangladesh, and Egypt.



On the other hand, the apparel exports from India, Vietnam. and Indonesia to the US have declined in terms of both value and volume.

Despite this improved performance in the export of textiles, Pakistan’s domestic industry is still facing severe challenges including a decrease in cotton production which is the main raw material for the textile sector.

The government recently allowed the duty-free import of cotton yarn to make up for the shortage in supply. However, experts believe that maintaining a sustainable supply of cotton will remain a challenge for Pakistan.

until our industrialists take initiative to improve working conditions for the labor, even the incentives given to textile industry by present govt will go invain.

there was time when factories in countries like Bangladesh and Cambodia were improving to the standards of Europe for labor rights, we were sleeping. today they are meeting world demand. just look at Bangladesh how they improve and it was a collective effort by the govt and textile industry.

right from the cotton growing which is collapsing to the composite apparel unit everything need to improvise otherwise we are wasting the potential.

We should also consider investing in Africa and Asia as a means to secure our supply chains. Yes, there's a high chance our own raw materials output is under capacity, but we need to think in terms of capturing the max share of the market. That will require controlling cotton output in other areas. It would also give our textile shops a leg up against other producers (as Pakistani suppliers can control both cotton and the final product).

if you are talking about capturing raw cotton market in Africa and Asia it is not possible not even around the world.

there are some very ancient even centuries old and huge enterprises if i name a few : Vittera, Reinhart, Cargil etc. that are controlling cotton all over the world. they not only procure from around the world with massive work force and supply chain management and fulfill orders but they also hold the market futures at NY stock exchange.

they are so huge and with their impact they set the cotton future rates. just ask the textile mills in any country they will prefer working with them instead of direct purchases.

also there are destinations like Turkemenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazkhystan and Kyrgyzstan in central Asia and many destinations in Africa like Ivory Coast, Benin, Burkina Faso, Senegal etc. with whom nobody is willing to trade cotton due to their unreliability, these i companies mentioned procure their cotton and sell.

central Asian republics cannot trade without govt involvement hence they ship to near by ports like Turkish ports for onward sale.

US is willingly not helping Pakistan, they are just playing with Pakistan since years. Pakistan did work hard several times to gain their market otherwise trade potential with US is huge.

We must focus on higher value products/services. We can easily take the indian IT service share especially with our lower costs and talented engineers. We should aim for 20billion IT exports annually by the end of the decade (currently stands at around 2bn and growing at 50% annually)
