Not sure if the powers that be realize it, but going towards default empowers people to say crazy things like literally splitting the country into a North and South Pakistan.

Earlier this person had suggested export oriented industries to be in Karachi and in the south, which makes sense for economic reasons. But literally splitting the country into feeds into the narrative that Punjabi’s run everything, etc. etc. etc.

If that tragedy were to befall, I think Pakistan military has enough sense to destroy the nukes before Taliban takes over. I am sure there will be a lot of support in Congress to ensure that any such consequence will be orderly. Besides USSR, South Africa, Brazil and Libya went through such changes.

The US Pakistan rift is very complex. The US isn't only after Pakistani nuclear weapons. It holds Pakistan responsible for many problems including the Afghan war. The Western world still believes that Pakistan is responsible for the US/NATO loss in Afghanistan. The US is also very hurt about Chinese involvement in Pakistan. The Americans have for now thrown a wrench into the works. There is always the possibility that China Pakistan cooperation might proceed in the future. That is very problematic for the US.

The US doesn't only seek to confiscate Pakistani nuclear weapons and delivery systems. It wants to balkanize Pakistan in such a way where it calls the shots in strategic regions. The US won't settle for nothing less.

To use Clintonese, It depends on the meaning of the word 'collapse'. Is 'collapse' equal to fiscal meltdown plus political meltdown? If so, it has already happened. Notice Pakistan's problems are not just problems of lack of dollars; there is no meaningful polity to talk of. All their political leadership would not qualify for employment in middle management of a well-run company. Incompetence has been their bane for a few generations.
