Pakistan offers Kuwait Al-Khalid
Pakistan on Wednesday offered Kuwait to buy its indigenously developed al-Khalid main battle tanks to bolster its defence needs, Foreign Minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said. Addressing a press briefing here following meetings between President Asif Ali Zardari with several world leaders here on the margins of the meeting on interfaith dialogue, organised by the United Nations, the foreign minister said President Zardari in his meeting with the amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah invited his country to the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar- IDEAS-2008.
President Zardari said the two countries have wide ranging ties in political, economic, defence and other areas, and stressed that these need to be further strengthened in the days ahead.
The President invited the amir of Kuwait to visit Pakistan; an offer that he accepted, the foreign minister said. The President also invited a delegation of Kuwaiti defence forces at the Ideas exhibiton in November. The foreign minister said Pakistan offered the al-Khalid tank to Kuwait describing it as an attractive buy keeping in view its price and quality. The al-Khalid tank has a combat weight of 46 tons and carries a crew of three. Fitted with a 1200 HP water-cooled diesel engine, and a maximum speed of 70 km it has a 125mm smooth bore main gun, a 7.62mm co-axial machine gun and a 12.7mm remote firing anti-aircraft gun. The power to weight ratio is 26 horsepower per ton, enhancing the tanks agility.
The President also sought Kuwaiti investment in developing Pakistans energy sector, particularly the hydel sector, that has been neglected in the past. The foreign minister said he will soon be visiting Kuwait to apprise the Kuwaiti authorities about the Bhasha dam project.
Foreign minister Qureshi also gave more details about President Asif Ali Zardaris meeting with President of Philippines Mrs Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in which both the leaders expressed their resolve to assist each other at multilateral forums.
President Zardari sought support of Philippines in getting Pakistan the status of a dialogue partner at ASEAN, while Philippines asked for Pakistans support for observer status at the Organisation of Islamic Conference.The two sides also agreed to review the progress on their Joint Economic Commission for which an MoU was inked in July. The two leaders also invited each
other to visit their respective countries. Both accepted the offer. The two sides also agreed to celebrate 60 years of their diplomatic relations in 2009.
President Zadari and President Arroyo also discussed the importance of the interfaith dialogue aimed at bringing peace and prosperity to the world and the need for a united approach to achieve greater world harmony.
The two leaders who are here to attend the high level plenary meeting of the UN General Assembly on the Culture of Peace on the initiative of Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz met on the margins of moot to discuss ways the role their
two countries could play to bring global harmony and mutual understanding.
President Zardari apprised the President of Philippines the challenges his country was facing at the hands of extremists and terrorists who were bringing a bad name to the religion and Pakistan. He also informed her of the multi pronged approach that has been adopted to tackle the challenges.
The two leaders also discussed a range of bilateral matters and the need for greater collaboration and interaction to improve their political, diplomatic and economic ties.
President Zardari was of the view that both the countries need to explore new avenues of collaboration and widen the range of cooperation, particularly in trade and commerce. He said the private sectors of the two countries can generate
lot more economic activity with increased joint ventures.
The President of Philippines reciprocated the ideas of President and called for increased interaction between the two countries at all levels.
