The Type 054Ps are state-of-the-art major surface combatant warships, the most modern frigates ever developed by China and are designed for intense Anti-Air, Anti-Surface, and Anti-Submarine operations in the high seas. The over 4,000 tonne, 440 feet long warships will be armed with a 32-cell Vertical Launch System (VLS), which will be armed with the HHQ-16 SAM with a range of over 45 kilometres and the Yu-8 Anti Submarine Missile armed with a Yu-11 torpedo with a range of 50 kilometres, 2×4 ASCM launchers armed with the CM-302 supersonic anti-ship cruise missile with a range of 280-320 kilometres and a speed of Mach 3-4, a PJ-26 76 mm main naval gun with a maximum rate of fire of 120 rounds per minute, 2×3 Anti-Submarine Torpedo launchers for the Yu-11 torpedo with a maximum depth and range of 600 meters and over 20 kilometres respectively with a speed of over 50 knots, 2×6 Type 87 Anti-Submarine rocket launchers, Two Type 1130 CIWS with a maximum rate of 11,000 rounds per minute with an interception probability of 96% against high supersonic missiles.
The Pakistan Navy Type 054Ps will get delivered with advanced Z-9D Maritime ASW helicopters stationed at onboard helicopter deck & hangar.

Would it require a change in the VLS to get the longer range HHQ-16B variant or just a purchase difference, and perhaps chosen to minimize costs for now?

no, no and no.

There isnt actually a B variant of the sea based HQ-16 yet.

We will likely see a new missile for the H/AJK-16 VLS soon because the PLAN is continuing investment in the program even with 054B on the horizon.

@Bilal Khan (Quwa) PS, DM me on twitter, ive learnt some things about the argentinians which would make a really good article and want to connect you with somebody

There is the option for 2 more 054a. However i dont forsee anything like this for ada, instead, Jinnahs will be ordered
Agreed. It is time we indegenized our ships both to reduce costs build design and manufacturing capacity in house. This will also be instrumental in upgrading our ships as newer tech becomes available.

Pakistan signed an initial contract for the delivery two Type 054 A/P frigates in 2017. An additional contract for two more ships was announced in June 2018. The first-in-class frigate was launched in August 2020 and the second in January 2021. As for the third one, the keel laying took place on May 1st 2021. All four units are built in China and the first two are expected to be delivered to the customer by year end.

According to a Pakistan Navy press release, the Type-054 A/P ships are state of the art frigates equipped with modern surface, subsurface and anti air weapons and sensors. Once constructed, these ships will be the most technologically advanced platforms of Pakistan Navy which will strengthen its capability to meet future challenges and maintain peace, stability & power equilibrium in the Indian Ocean Region.

The Pakistan Navy is currently undertaking an important renewal of its fleet, with the procurement of several modern platforms: In addition to these frigates from China, Pakistan will also commission new corvettes from Turkey and OPV from the Netherlands. It is also modernizing its submarine force.

First Type 054 A/P for Pakistan Navy

The Type 054A is a multi-role frigate and is recognized as the backbone of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) fleet of surface combatants with 30 vessels in commission. They have a length of 134 meters, a beam of 16 meters for a displacement of 4,000 tons. They have a crew complement of 165 sailors and are fitted with:

  • a H/PJ-26 76mm main gun
  • 8 C803 anti-ship missiles
  • 32x VLS cells for HQ-16 surface to air missiles
  • 2x Type 730 30mm CIWS
  • 2x Triple Torpedo launchers

In PLAN service, those frigates feature a Type 382 radar which shares a close resemblance with the Russian MR-710 Fregat radar. Unlike the Pakistan Navy variant – whose first ship-in-class is fitted with a SR2410C radar – the Type 054A in Chinese Navy service do not feature a long range / metric wave radar.

Would have been nice if we had inducted a Type054 for every decade of existence

1947-1957 - Ship#1
1957-1967 - Ship#2
1967-1977 - Ship#3
1977-1987 - Ship#4
1987-1997 - Ship#5
1997-2007 - Ship#6
2007-2017 - Ship#7

The first 2 are eagerly awaited it will take quite a few years to adopt to the new platform

Wrong. The latest Chinese Type 054A do have SR2410C and all Chinese Type 054A are getting their Russian radars replaced by SR2410C.
