The remaining two Type 054A/P ships are on track to join the Pakistan Navy Fleet in 2023 and are expected to become the mainstay in the Pakistan Navy, Admiral M Amjad Khan Niazi told Global Times in a recent interview.

Considering the PN will probably be equipping these ships with the naval version of the HQ-16B (70km) and that the HQ-16FE (160 km) is supposedly a derivative, operated from the same launch tubes on the ground, can a naval version of the HQ-16FE fit in the same VLS of the Type 054A/P?

If equipped with a active missile seeker, at 160 km, it could be a formidable long range missile , and allow the Type 054A/P to be substantially more capable to handle the threat of supersonic cruise missiles, and be a good stop-gap before the procurement of a dedicated air defense destroyer when the economy can support such a procurement.

Pakistan Navy's 4th Type 054A/P (Tughril Class) FFG, PNS SHAH JAHAN (F-264), photographed at Hudong–Zhonghua Shipyard, Shanghai.
All primary sensors and systems have been integrated into the frigate. Expected to be delivered to PN this year after sea trials.
