Pakistan Navy inducts Karrar into its fleet

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy (PN) ship Karrar, the second Multi-Role Tactical Platform (MRTP-33) vessel, was commissioned into the Pakistan Navy in an impressive ceremony on Friday at the PN dockyard.

Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir was the chief guest at the event. The admiral said that several large shipbuilding and port construction projects currently underway were indicative of the rapid growth in the maritime sector.

He said the near-permanent shape of the coalition maritime campaign was an indicator of the unpredictable nature of the maritime environment, and thanked the Turkish government for providing assistance in strengthening the defence needs of the Pakistan Navy.

In his welcome address, Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (Projects) Rear Admiral Azhar Shamim highlighted the significance of the project, in which several modifications were made in the internal design of the boat to suit PN requirements.

Pak navy commissions craft acquired from Turkey

Karachi (PTI): Pakistan Navy on Friday commissioned a fast attack craft acquired from Turkey to boost its capability to protect coastal installations and carry out maritime interdiction operations.

The PNS Karrar, the second Multi-Role Tactical Platform (MRTP)-33 boat purchased from Turkey, was commissioned during a ceremony at the naval dockyard that was attended by navy chief Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir.

The craft will be fitted with guns and missiles commensurate with its role of providing coastal defence and carrying out offensive operations, said an official statement. The vessel is designed for fast attacks, maritime interdiction operations and protection of coastal installations.

The statement said it has high stealth characteristics and can carry surface-to-surface missiles and guns. The first boat of the same class, PNS Zarrar, was commissioned in November last year.

Admiral Tahir said a large number of mega projects related to ship construction and ports were indicators of the rapid growth in the maritime sector.

"These developments have not only enhanced the economic activity in coastal areas but also increased the responsibilities of the Pakistan Navy to provide seaward defence," he said.

The availability of platforms like the MRTP-33 will provide to fleet commanders greater flexibility in execution of tasks, he said.

Noting that the "near permanent shape of the coalition maritime campaign is an indicator of the unpredictable maritime environment", Tahir said "this does not allow us to lower our guard."

I think this vessel is PNS Karrar during the sea trials in Tuzla. The Photo is from February 2008. Are any new photos avaible.

. . . .
so far the plan is for 2-4 MRTP-33s however at least 10 are required to patrol/defend the coastal waters.

awesome images :pakistan: hope we will get more in future. I have a question here..
does this boat have any air defense system? how can this boat defend itself from hostile aircraft/chopper??

It would be better if our focus remains on phasing out the old ex amazon class frigates and start inducting new Subs and frigates.

.
That would be a waste of good money. At this point, Pakistan needs more and more of these types of ships that are good at performing coastal defence ALONG with anti-piracy operations along Pakistan's shores. More of these types, would ensure that smuggling through Pakistan drops to a great extent, more contraband is seized. Better bang for buck i think as per the needs.

According to S&H Magazine (Turkey), PN has maked an order for 2 more MRTP-33 with new developed Aselsan Stop.
