Pakistan Navy capable of blocking Strait of Hormuz?

Pakistan Navy could easily blockade the Strait of Hormuz, and the PAF can focus its entire air force to sink the rust bucket Indian Navy as it sails towards the Strait.

Indian Navy only has old useless Harriers and a few Mig-29. The PAF would overwhelm them and sink the Indian fleet.
dont you think if their jets can reach there, ours airfore can too from our western bases...not to mention the jets on AC's and the sams on naval ships.

.
Good analysis OP.
But i dont think Pakistan have any such ambitions of becoming a regional power. We only defend our territory and integrity.

.
That is why the blockade will have to be selective. Only ships travelling to Indian ports would be sunk, disabled or captured.

That would be during a war I think, not during peace time?

Though we can always threaten them if they try something funny with Pakistan's water.

I have heard more and more talk from Pakistan Navy officials about acquiring enough naval capability to be able to selectively blockade Strait of Hormuz essentially choking India of vital fuel supplies in case of war.

If you look at the geography, it seems very plausible that PN will be able to impose a very effective blockade.

With the development of Gwadar port, the ability to blockade the strait seems more and more possible.
It will be very hard for Indian navy to operate in an area where 13 submarines are lurking and JF-17's armed with CM-400AKG will be on constant patrol.

Once HQ-9 is acquired, Pakistan's writ on the area will be strengthened even more as it will be very hard to send aircraft against P-3C Orions when the area will be covered by HQ-9 missiles.

The only but vital precaution PN will have to take will be to ensure that Strait of Hormuz stays open to normal International shipping, otherwise oil prices will skyrocket and the whole world will be pissed at us. Military intelligence will have to play a very important role in this regard.

P.S: I apologize for poor Paint skills :p:
In a simple answer - No.

Let me elaborate:

1. Selective blockade is not possible as ships can fly different flags to hide their origin. The only way to ascertain then is to board the ship and even there, the ledgers can be altered.

And Pakistan does not even have 1/50th the military strength required to board the ships in the gulf

2. Lets assume Pakistan's naval strength is magically increased 50 times and it is able to board and locate precisely which ships are going to India. India may then decide to contest the area.

In that case, Pakistan Navy will be fighting with Indian Navy on the high seas. Let me tell you - thats not a contest that would last more than 24 hours for Pakistan.

3. Thirdly, lets assume Indian Navy decides to send even a fraction of its strength to the Gulf area to contest PN there. It would take the entire PN to successfully pull off a selective blockade - which means the entire Pakistani coastline would be at the mercy of Indian Navy - including Karachi.

4. Lets assume that PN is again magically supported by Martians and it is able to continue any kind of blockade despite IN contesting the sea.. it would not have any major effect on India.

Why ?
a) Because India is building a 90 day petroleum reserve in the mountains across India
b) Because around 50% of India's energy comes from the gulf. And with India starting
energy purchases from USA starting next year, it is set to come down even further.

Please note that crossing even point 1 is downright impossible for Pakistan. That's just bad luck for Pakistan that a far larger and militarily far stronger country like India is their opponent.

Pakistan is as likely to put up any sort of successful blockade against Indian forces as Pakistan is likely to lead a successful ground invasion and plant Pakistan's flag over the White House or Kremlin.

Did you have a look at the map i posted? Pakistan is right next to Strait of Hormuz while India....

It's not about being a regional power. It's about snatching an opportunity to have a stronger position during negotiations for cease fire.

Of course, why in the world would we do such a blockade during peace time??!!! I clearly said so in the analysis.

You fool. The Strait of Hormuz is too far from India. But it is right on the door step of Pakistan.

The wild card will be China. We could reinforce Pakistan in the Gulf and attack from the East.

India cannot defend on two fronts.

ok sir,but there are many bases in western sector of india..jamnagar,bhuj,vadsar to name a few...and they are not very far..in reach of su30's and migs deployed in western front....and our navy is far better than them..and our AC's will be there too with naval ships with sams...and china was not part of this topic.

In the real world, China will be involved, especially when things get serious between India and our ally, Pakistan.

The reality is, India is too far from the Strait. Pakistan Navy and Air Force will overwhelm the Indian Carrier Battle Group and it will be humiliation day for India.

China will also reinforce Pakistan, and threaten India from the East.

When you cannot build an Aircraft carrier, only consolation that you have is to resort to this sort of butthurt powered articles which complain about latrines and cost escalation.
First we don't need one we just need to develop a Navy with 16 Frigates and Corvettes and 4 to 6 Destroyers along with 14 Submarines enough to take on India

just check the names of the bases i said..they are well within reach....and if china is involved, there wont be any kind of naval blockade ..cause of the same chinese factor..as chinese are quite sensible guys:guns:

Blind jingoism sprinkled with some sane statements.

That's where our military intelligence will play a vital role. Let's not forget our alliance with GCC.

Of course India is going to contest the blockade, it will be strategic suicide for India not to. But question is would they dare to enter waters held by PN subs?
3. Thirdly, lets assume Indian Navy decides to send even a fraction of its strength to the Gulf area to contest PN there. It would take the entire PN to successfully pull off a selective blockade - which means the entire Pakistani coastline would be at the mercy of Indian Navy - including Karachi.
Watch the map i posted. PN will easily be able to defend Pakistan Coastline and enforce a blockade as the area overlaps.
Why would there be no contest? Indian Navy will be entering PAF controlled airspace with no defence against CM-400AKG missiles. The only option left will be to use carriers, but we all know the IN carriers have hardly ever left the port.

The only sane post in your entire rant. But even if India does not rely on GCC for it's fuel supplies, you do know that ships travel along the coast line? They would have to enter PN controlled waters anyways.

Yeah, Americans clearly seem to be "butthurt" about Indian Navy's 2 cent carriers. Keep living in your fantasies, i'm sure it's very convenient.

To teach them a lesson that they are dependent on us so better behave :enjoy:

During war time yes if Muslim Brotherhood plays well and comes into action.

I can see your entire technical knowledge is summed up by you calling my post as a 'rant'.

Your response to something that even the Iraqis at their height of power could not do, is say "Where our military intelligence will play a vital role".

Yeah, sure that will happen.

Secondly, do you even know that your Navy is extra-ordinarily small. And you have zero idea about Indian Navy's capability build up, let alone capacity buildup except for "Carriers".

I can see this is a futile discussion with you. I am not going to waste my time. Good luck.

A Chinese conscript reject lacks common sense, which is the reason of it being schooled pretty much on all defence and technology related forums.

India is operating aircraft carriers for 54 Years and ,unlike your flopping fish carrier, has a proper aircraft capable of carrying 30 Mig-29Ks , and would finish its homegrown carrier capable of carrying 30 more Mig-29Ks this year.INS Vikrant likely to be undocked by May-end , even if we discount 26 Harrier carrying Viraat.

India could strike at long distance using its Aircraft carriers, a concept that you would understand once you start operating carriers.
