India knocked out in last over

JOHANNESBURG: It was one of the most dramatic and heart-wrenching exits for India in recent cricketing history. Fans around the globe let out a
deep collective sigh and cursed under their breath as Ricky Ponting's Australia knocked MS Dhoni's men out of the Champions Trophy on Wednesday.

But the two teams were not playing each other. The Indians were physically present at the Wanderers, going through the motions against the West Indies, while their spirits soared and sank with the captivating events unfolding a few miles away.

At Centurion, Australia's steely, nerve-wracking last-ball win over Pakistan knocked the wind out of India's sails and produced the most thrilling match of the event so far. The Aussies now deservingly go through to the semis and a lacklustre India must pack their bags.

India needed Pakistan, who had already qualified, to win at all costs to have any chance of surviving and for a while, it looked it as if Dhoni & Co had been blessed with the devil's luck. The team was quietly resigned to its fate, though, when it arrived for the day-nighter against the Windies after Pakistan had limped to a moderate 205 in the morning. Halfway through the WI innings, hope suddenly wafted in unannounced from Centurion as Australia, chasing a moderate 206, sank from 140/2 to 187/8.

It must have been difficult for the Indian players to focus on the task at hand at that stage. The swing in Australian and Indian fortunes blared through the PA system at the Wanderers and the action in the middle became incidental. Fans cheered or groaned, depending on whether an Australian wicket had fallen or a run had been scored. Ponting and Hussey were going strong but the collapse meant Australia were staring at the abyss. It looked like Mitchell Johnson's dismissal had firmly tilted the scales in Pakistan's, and India's favour, but there was to be another twist.

Six runs off the last eight balls with eight wickets down, and it became impossible to watch the meaningless action unfolding in the India game. Dinesh Karthik and Gautam Gambhir were out in the middle chasing a paltry score after the West Indies were dismissed early for 129 in 36 overs, but they would rather have been in the dressing room with their mates watching the TV. Australia needed four runs off the last six balls to win or three runs to tie and qualify. Brett Lee and Nathan Hauritz kept their nerve, the winning runs eventually coming in byes off the last delivery from Gul. A chill descended on the Wanderers.

It slowly sank in that India had been down on performance and out of luck throughout this event and Wednesday was no different. There were to be no turnarounds, only the tantalising whiff of a miracle that didn't transpire. The Pakistan loss sealed the team's fate. Yuvraj Singh's freakish injury was a cruel blow. The absence of Sehwag and Zaheer Khan meant the team lacked match-winning bite.

In keeping with the pattern, Sachin Tendulkar skipped India's last game because of an upset stomach.

Perhaps it was the first time that entire Indian nation was praying for Pakistan's victory.

Hilariously amusing that Pakistani supporters care so much about India's exit. Perhaps more than the achievements of their own team.

:) well its both ways specialy when Indian players were glued to screens praying for Pakistan's win instead of concentrating on their own game and players in the field and specially when one of them were bitting nails in tension ;)

Come on its the same with both nations.

For us the more important thing after victory against India, was the good performance against Australia.

Regarding some of the posts in this thread -

I don't get the logic of mixing India's response to Mumbai attacks with the concerned cricket match for the sake of humor.

Mumbai attacks was something very serious and India had every right to raise the issue with Pakistan and demand action to be taken against those people with LeT etc. links.

But some people find making mockery of Indian response too funny. Sad really.

What could be more difficult and painful?
I wonder if those holding Pakistan flags in the field were infact indians!

CENTURION – Within minutes of Pakistan’s last ball defeat at the hands of Australia at the Centurion ground in South Africa, Indian Minister for Extrenal Affairs S M Krishna has sensationally pointed the finger at Kashmir-based militant group ‘Lashkar-e-Tayba’ which it alleges is supported by Pakistan’s InterServices Intelligence Agency (ISI).

‘We know there is no way Pakistan would have lost to Australia after being in a winning position towards the end. We have intercepted calls from Lashkar-e-Tayba masterminds made to the Pakistan dressing room in those last few minutes of the game. You can see why Misbah-ul-Haq went down and asked the physio came out with the message that they have to lose the game.’ He remarked.

Earlier, Home Affairs minister P Chidambaram had talked of Lashkar-e-Tayba using earnings from betting on allegedly fixed matches to fund what he called ‘Terror attacks’ on Indian soil.

“Its the oldest and quickest way to make money to be used for Terror attacks against India”, he said. “Daud Ibrahim has done if in the past and now Lashkar-e-Tayba has bought the Pakistan team and I suspect even the Australian team. The international community must take notice of this injustice on India and punish Pakistan severely. We will take this to the United Nations Security Council and get both teams banned”

“Team India is the best team in the world at the moment and despite not winning any games in the ICC T20 and going out in this tournament, they will still be the number one team in the world. Infact we have arrested today a Pakistani ISI agent who masterminded the fixing the matches in the T20 World Cup in June this year”, added Chidambaram.

Reaction on the streets to India going out of the ICC Champions Trophy has been surprisingly muted. Fans interviewed minutes after Australia’s victory at Centurion declared they never expected India to fare well in this tournament.

“Everytime Pakistan plays we know the games are fixed by the ISI, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Daud Ibrahim and Al Qaeda. They know they cannot beat us fair and square so they have resorted to paying the officials and umpires to make it difficult for India to win. There’s no point watching cricket anymore whenever Pakistan is involved. I just want to kill myself”, said a teary-eyed 24 year old cricket fan in Delhi before jumping off the 7 ft high boundary wall around his slum and breaking his arm.

India is also said to be launching a probe into the rain that washed out their game against Australia on the 28th, giving a point each to both teams which led to India having to rely on Pakistan’s result against Australia today. Alleging the involvement of Chinese weather satellites, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has promised investigate claims from his cabinet that Beijing had assisted Pakistan’s ISI in changing the weather conditions at Centurion, causing a massive downpour that swept away India’s hopes and rested them firmly on Pakistan’s shoulders.

Meanwhile in another development, a few members of the Pakistan cricket team had to be taken to hospital after being out of breath due to laughing uncontrollably at an Indian TV Programme.

‘The boys are fine, we just happened to tune into this programme, I think it was a comedy show, on Zee News in the dressing room and man those guys are hilarious, we just couldn’t stop laughing’, said star batsman Shahid Afridi before bursting into another fit of laughter and being stretchered off to the emergency ward himself.

Sir jee - that was satire ... poking some fun ... :azn:

Though after reading your reaction I am beginning to wonder if some Pakistanis and Indians will actually take that seriously, which in itslef would be a cause for another round of stretchers being brought in for the laughter impacted.

It was a slip of tongue, the minister was trying to say

"Pakistan must formally pay his sympathy to India"
