Pakistan may have received two SAAB 2000 Planes

Two SAAB landed yesterday I give a dam you want to believe or not. 3 are on order and first ones were going to come by mid 2018 and they have arrived. Radar will get fitted at KAMRA

Buy all the Saab 2000s and have PAF fly them too. This would be a cheap way to run a regional airlines, with depo and maintenance work done at Kamra.

Here is another thought: Have direct flights from Dubai to northern areas of Pakistan. Would become a big hit for tourists from the ME and worldwide. Saab 2000s would be ideal for that. Great high altitude performance. Who cares about a little extra sound?

It was hoped that PIA choose the SAAB 2000 as well so maintenance could be shared between the AF and PIA but they chose ATR instead. SAAB 2000 production stoppage could have been a reason, there are only a few number of them available. So not a wise decision if you want to have the ability to grow your fleet in large numbers in the future. For eg with the ATR PIA can always acquire new builds in what ever quantity it desires to increase fleet size or even replace older ATRs with new builds. On the plus side with PIA opting out to buy, PAF will have ability to buy them if no other customer interested in stored SAAB 2000s.

PIAs problems have been the fact that their bosses don't market or run the airline with a profit making or cost cutting mindset. Else if they had there were alot of capabilities in terms of engineering they could have offered to other airlines. Its idiocy that PIA uses B777ER/LR that are optimized for long routes for mere 2hr KHI-ISB or LHR routes. If they had planned properly they would have used or inducted short haul jets which would have made profits on those routes. PIA was at one time and could have still been a regional maintenance and training hub for alot of other airlines.

Heard PIA is mulling replacements for it's ATRs, since existing fleet is over used. Lets see how that goes, but SAAB 2000s are out of the equation for them.

As for the two SAAB 2000s, if the intended purpose is for AWACs conversion it is likely we will only get official confirmation once they are properly inducted after retro fittings. With the current govt deficits it will not be wise to advertise weapon purchases when we would be going for debt re servicing or borrowing to boost foreign reserves.

The problem with PIA, KSEW, HIT is that they are run inefficiently. In my opinion:

PIA should be converted to a publicly traded company with only Pakistani nationals (and not corporations or foreign nationals) allowed to purchase stock. Over time, sell of 80% of the shares, with the governing board then being run on the basis of profit.

KSEW needs to be seeded by management from NESCOM and those institutions that ran the nuclear program, and over time, run by internally promoting marine engineers, rather than being run by semi-retired naval bureaucracy

HIT needs to go the KSEW way above.

Without these fundamental reforms, nothing will change. No amount of ToT, fund raising, etc will be worth anything.

Initially paf had proposed joint paf, Pia and pn Saab 2k acquisition for both awacs, pn anti surface /sub package from Saab and Pia but it did not work out I think idea was it was economical and all can pretty much pickup majority of 52 plus inventory around the world

Pia and pn went with more popular/successful atr series and paf stick to Saab 2k which was already I guess developed as awacs

There may be a chance again to do this given PIA possibly needs more aircraft in this range. This could be a better buy than ATR because they could be bought in numbers jointly, and they are in very low demand in the market.

PIA needs airplanes that are readily available, not a panda. Military doesn't have to follow civilian rules so they can improvise (to an extent) when it comes to maintenance, PIA can't do that. They need spares otherwise you end with AOG
