KARACHI: The countrys export of finished and semi-finished marble products including marble slabs witnessed a massive increase of 173 percent to $18.03 million in July-September of fiscal year 2012-13 as against $6.60 million recorded during the same period of FY 2011-12, exporters said on Thursday.
BMG All Pakistan Marble Mining Processing Industry and Exporters Association (APMMPIEA) Chairman Sanaullah Khan said the export of the sector was highest ever in 15 days of September 2012, when it crossed more around $5.50 million.
It was due to timely shipment of consignments besides sheer commitment of exporters despite power supply shortage in major manufacturing units.
Pakistan marble products have a high demand in the international market due to their fine quality of stone available in the country while expertise in making finished products.
The export target by the sector in 2012 is around to meet $500 million export but all depends on smooth supply of power, water and better law and order situation, particularly in the manufacturing areas, he added.
In Saudi Arabia alone, the total value of contracts awarded in the Kingdom hit $66 billion in 2011, a 6.0 percent increase over the previous year.
Pakistan can fetch export orders worth billions of dollars for marble finished and semi-finished products if the trade commissioners in Pakistan missions in Saudi Arab strive more to explore new markets for Pakistani marble products.
The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan should also get involved in exploration of new market sources by using their trade offices worldwide, he advised.
There is a dire need to explore construction sectors in Saudi Arabia and other Arab states as billions of dollars construction projects with more than $1,500 million marble products are needed.
In order to supply better grade stone to mainstream marble stakeholders and marble products manufacturers in the countrys largest industrial marble hub in Karachi, Pakistan Stone Development Company (PASDEC) should provide them information for better grade excavation produce in future on regular basis and prove to be productive for the local stakeholders.
According to PASDEC, it would consider establishing square slabs display centres in local markets for promotion of this new product.
Khan said investors from Italy and European countries including UK, Saudi Arabia, Korea and China were still showing great interest and wanted to start joint ventures with the Pakistani counterparts.
US Agency for International Development (USAID) said there are bright prospects through facilitation to achieve further growth in Pakistans marble and granite industry.
