ISLAMABAD – Pakistan has invited and offered Saudi Arabia to invest in Pakistan mega projects in oil and gas sector and the petrochemicals field.

Pakistan has offered Saudi Arabia to enhance the bilateral relations into strong and strategic economic partnership.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to work out proposals for enhancing bilateral economic cooperation through identifying specific areas in trade and investment.

The agreement was reached in a meeting of the Joint Pak-Saudi Working Group on Trade and Investment was held at Islamabad. Federal Commerce Secretary Mohammad Younus Dagha and Saudi Arabian Foreign Trade Deputy Minister Abdulrahman Alharbi co-chaired the session.

The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Pakistan H.E. Nawaf Saeed Al-Maliki, officials from Saudi Ministries of Commerce and Investment, Energy, Industry and Mineral Resources, SABIC, Maaden and officials from Ministries of Commerce, Energy and National Food Security, Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and Board of Investment participated in the meeting.

Federal Secretary Commerce Mohammad Younus Dagha emphasized that Pakistan government desires that the long and historic relationship between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia should be translated into enhanced economic partnership.

He invited Saudi government and private sector to invest in Oil Refining, Petro chemicals and food processing industry in Pakistan. After the official discussions, Petroleum Division, and leading private sector companies presented their project proposals.

The follow up of first JWG meeting was also discussed to resolve non- tariff barriers, facilitating business visas, and logistic arrangements of Pakistan Single Country Exhibition in Jeddah as well as activating Joint Business Council.

Abdulrahman Alharbi elaborated that the Kingdom desires to have close economic partnership with Pakistan and the two countries could cooperate and have joint ventures in petro chemicals, food processing and other sectors.

The Saudi delegation also comprised of six businessmen from petro-chemical and food sectors. Their B2B meetings were arranged with Pakistani companies from meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables, rice and petrochemical sectors on 6th September 2018.

The companies presented details of their meat and food processing plant which meet Saudi standards and have been registered by Saudi Food and Drug Agency. The Saudi side expressed keen interest in the investment projects and trade proposals and the two sides agreed to take further steps expeditiously to materialize these proposals.

Saudis need to stop seeing Pakistan from US lens and focus on bilateral relations. They backed out on FATF and their are other issues related to Pakistan where US and Saudi Arabia see eye to eye. This needs to stop and Pakistani government needs to be absolutely clear about it.

What are the facts about FATF with some credible source since there have been conflicting accounts but none with definitive evidence. I heard that KSA defended Pakistan more than any and even had disagreement with USA, which given their circumstances feels very daunting for them and good for us.
BTW do you know why Pakistan's name is in FATF? As per Dr SM it is because of the money laundering which is linked to the terror financing. That basically leads to our corrupt badmashiya and if Pakistan takes action to eliminate or at least minimise this money laundering, it will come out of this FATF. Thats's the main reason why the state is so serious about the issue and perhaps that the only reason IK has been let to win the elections...otherwise, they would have rigged the election again to bring the status quo back into the power under pressure from the world powers.

The Saudi Vision 2030 is empty Without Pakistan.

Hopefully the new government will strengthen the inseparable bond the two brotherly Nations foster unconditionally.
I don't see how the Pakistani government can compromise on critical issues that the Saudis want like deploying Pakistani troops in Yemen - not going to happen, especially given IK's clear statement about 'not fighting other peoples wars'.

Nor is Pakistan going to make an open enemy out of Iran, a neighbor with whom we have cultural and religious links, one that India is courting actively.

The Saudis did not support us in the FATF - nothing is going to change on the above two critical issues for them to suddenly start supporting Pakistan. If they invest in Pakistan, it will be solely because they see an opportunity to make a lot of money, and not because of any 'brotherly bonds' between the SA & Pakistan.

Well, we have to do business with all and develop relation with all based on our national interests.

Saudis had no influence in FATF.

Yemen issue is settled and no request nor pressure has been made on pakistan ever since the last parliament decided against it.

Pakistan needed 3 votes to avoid being grey listed - it had the Saudis, Chinese and Turks on board. Then the Saudis pulled out under US pressure and the Chinese followed suit to 'save face'.

At least with the Chinese one could forgive them over this given that they have invested tens of billions of dollars in Pakistan, supported us with advanced weapons sales etc. The Saudis have of late done pretty much nothing of consequence for Pakistan.

Good move. Pak should primarily focus on building relationships through development and uplift. Let India be used as proxy by others.

Stay focused on the economy at least until 2050 to see true results. Start no wars and sue for peace!.

Saudis are observers not on the voting member list in FATF.

So Khawaja Asif was wrong in claiming Saudi support as being helpful to Pakistan in the FATF?

Saudis are part of the GCC, which does have a vote. Since the Saudis are the biggest voice in the GCC, they get to make the call on how that vote is cast.

Saudis are observers today, but are supposed to get voting rights soon for themselves.
