Who guarantees quality of "Made in Pakistan" products ? Why should consumers be forced to buy sub standard products ?

Who guaruntees quality of foreign products? For decades people across Europe were sold horse meat as Beef. The same authorities who failed in Europe fail regularly in Pakistan.

Best to buy organic if you want to be sure. There is a business opportunity here - farmers markets in cities.

Nobody's forcing them to buy expensive imported items too.

Unfortunately, importing Italian Marble, German Grohe sanitary fittings, Italian Ariston water heaters, Land cruisers and other exorbitant luxury items are more important to the ruling elite, the avg joe has this option shoved down his throat.

Some one needs to do an OP on how all these items are imported without tarrifs, or at off the book pittance.

Why would someone focus on that when we have Nutella to ponder about?

Nobody wants to talk about the construction business because anything about LAND creates anarchy in Pakistan.

True. Cost of this "Juche" will be borne by common man.

"One day ".. Something revolutionaries of past century used to talk about. Never came though.

As per the OP IMF wants to strengthen the world economy - exactly what Reza Baqir did with Egypt, before taking over SBP.

Secondly, non essential items with high tariffs, should be temporarily banned till the economy strengthens.

Imposing very high tariff on daily consumables is a bad move. This is a protectionist policy of last century which encouraged crony-capitalism in garb of patriotic juche. Populace will be forced to consume sub-standard stuff, while select few will rule the market.

I believe the boy explain things perfectly

It is basically just propaganda by the incumbent Government;

It is a good suggestion to build bases and local industries, however all the machinery and most of the raw material will still have to be imported. Consider Nutella as an example, once you have imported the machinery to make Nutella, you will still need to import major ingredients/raw material such as Palm oil, Hazelnuts, Cocoa, Vanillin etc.

Furthermore, with the increasingly damaging devaluation of rupee, production cost will also go up as cost of labor and utilities, such as gas, electricity etc. are all going up and will continue the upward trend.

The right thing would have been to discourage import of luxury items but keep the USD low for establishment of industry, we had a golden opportunity to establish industry especially SME thanks to the previous Government which had invested heavily in power generation and transport infrastructure. But it is a futile exercise with the USD @ 165, there is NO WAY to compete with international brands with such a weak rupee until and unless we have a well established industry and even then only if we are self reliant on most of the raw material.

Raises an important point, how will cost of raw material go down, when the USD is going up.
