India has made additions to its nuclear arsenal and other military systems that could undermine security in South Asia, Pakistan's nuclear weapons oversight body warned yesterday (see GSN, Jan. 4).
"India continues to pursue an ambitious militarization program and offensive military doctrines," Agence France-Presse quoted the Pakistani National Command Authority as stating.
It added: "Massive inductions of advanced weapon systems, including installation of ABMs (antiballistic missiles), buildup of nuclear arsenal and delivery systems ... tend to destabilize the regional balance."
"This relentless pursuit of military preponderance will have severe consequences for peace and security in South Asia as well as for the Indian Ocean region. Pakistan cannot be oblivious to these developments," NCA officials said (Agence France-Presse/Google News, Feb. 13).
By allowing India to import nuclear power plant fuel from abroad, international nuclear suppliers enable the country to dedicate its domestic fuel production capabilities to generating nuclear-weapon material, the body added, according to the Associated Press of Pakistan (see GSN, Sept. 8, 2008)
"While continuing to act with responsibility and avoiding an arms race, Pakistan will not compromise on its security interests, the imperative of maintaining a credible minimum deterrence," it said in a statement (Associated Press of Pakistan/BBC Monitoring, Jan. 13).
