What's new

Pakistan is world’s 5th largest milk producing country

We don't even improve our own breed and instead even import semen?
Desi cattle breeds or humped breeds are inferior to European breeds
These are two sub specieas of cattle Bos indicus or humped cattle and Bos Taurus or humpless cattle
with selective breeding yield of Desi cows can be improved but still their yield will be much lower than Frezian and Jersey
And artificial insemination of Sahiwal breed is more popular because semen of exotic breeds costs more

.
They are using the Hide to make end user products and making 10x the $, same with raw Marble export to Italy which refines it and sells is as Italian Marble which fetches high end $ in US.

Sir G, you are right. Why we didn't developed the industry to produce end products from raw material and market them, it will be good for Pakistan's economy.

.
Where is it? I live at Malir garrison.

farms on highway but you can google they do home delivery

wow you sound like you kmow your cows!

Sorry, cannot say about other areas but in our area of Gujranwala/Sialkot we ONLY like to drink milk of Buffaloes. We DON'T like cow's milk. Our ancestors have always kept only Buffaloes for dairy purposes for centuries, cows were there but their milk was considered to be for "bemaar" people or "babies" who cannot digest Buffalo milk. The only thing I miss living in Germany is Buffalo milk because here in Germany all dairy products are made out of Cow milk. The taste of Buffalo milk is far superior to the taste of cow's milk, also Buffalo milk has more calcium/protein/fat/calories than Cow's milk per one liter.
yes every market has different taste preference our Pakistani market prefer buff milk over cow but commerciallly buff is not feasible and because we dint work on improving buff breed their yields sre very low

That's frankly inexcusable. Cheese, yoghurt, milk drinks etc require just minimal investment for the value they then generate. Is the official problem in Pakistan cold storage logistics? (unofficial problem is always current cartels).

Even if (esp end sale) cold storage is problem...simply more hardy cheeses can be looked at in interim.

Hmm interesting, but I think some RnD can be applied to this. There are many coagulant variants these days past traditional rennet...and it can be optimised to the milk. The thing is you need a dedicated team to research somewhat intensely...because often everyone simply want you to believe (arguing immediate bottom dollar rather than long term vision one) that you need to copy and paste global supply (so you can get mismatch from what the generic world logistics provide in bulk compared to what you are able to produce at home).

I mean heck, mozarella is produced in italy with buffalo milk! Replicate a desi mozarella...it can be done I am sure.

well rnd is not our forte we are lazy fkers who will rather import a product then work on finding a better solution locally

and other issue is cost of production is really high in pakistan that makes local cheese uncompetitive

There must be a way around it.
RnD dedicate time and money but woh karay ga kon ab tak toh nai kia

As per this article Pakistan's milk production is 60 million metric tons

1 metric ton = 1000 liter
Pakistan's population is 220 million
60/220*1000 = 272.73 liter
Pakistan's per capita annual milk production is 272 liter
yes we are importing semen but see i have seen improvement specially in punjab farmers in punjab have developed their in cross breed
Livestock department advises to not cross breed high yielding Desi cows but cross breeding low yielding cows is recommended
Best buffalo and Desi cattle breeds are found in Pakistani Punjab neeli Buffalo and sahiwal cow
Most of the people in Punjab keep buffalo because areas close to rivers are natural habitat of buffalo
buffalo's milk production is higher than Desi cows but lower than crossbreed cows

@Dubious

Without sounding patronizing, condescending and sarcastic, I would like to add my two cents. These reports mostly are stupid, outdated and often lack primary data. Most of them are often not even based upon secondary data, tertiary data even that is questionable.

Let me give you few examples while I have my reservations about processed milk from olpers and nestle but the way they have setup the collection channel is a wonder in itself. Totally green filed projects coupled with micro-finance banks who did lending to purchase a cow/buffalo even goats for household and milk production, excess milk is sold. There are collection points all across Punjab from small villages to town where milk is collected by these companies and they are compensated (economically) well. The financial proceed are used to payoff the micro-finance banks. I know families in rural Punjab who had nothing a decade or so ago now they are having flocks of dozens of cows/buffaloes.

If you travel on M2/M3/M1 in the early hours of the day (between 3 am to 5 am) like me you will see vehicle upon vehicle travelling on M1/M2/M3, specialized vehicles carrying milk from collection centers to processing centers.

People may not have heard of ever fresh they have 2600 buffaloes, 3000 Australian cows and almost the same amount of dutch cows and they are going into massive expansion upto 10,000 each all the milk is collected by them and sold to nestle on daily basis. BTW their farm is located near bhera.

Now those living in central punjab know about Prema/Anhaar milk units their dairy farms are much bigger than that of ever fresh, they have mostly dutch/australian/newzealand breeds along sahiwal/neelibar cows and local buffaloes. Each one of them have good breeding capabilities/expertise all imported, local enhancements too are being done.

Nishat (Mian Mansha) is coming in this business really big time, another large industrial concern from Faisalabad (JK Spinning) is starting this business even in bigger terms, I do know a few other projects in KPK and Punjab are about to kick start.

BTW military dairies made a large acquisition of a local brand (NURPUR) and they are into massive expansion, this number 5 position may not hold true for much longer I think we will be at number three in less than a decade, milk processing is improving, I heard milk condensation and powder plants have been planned.

There are large dairy farms being setup in sahiwal and okara, with the exception of military dairies/sahiwal/okara rest of Punjab based processing/farms mostly are located in and around bhera/faislabad conveniently located near motorway of for that matter near fateh jang/chakwal/mansehra/mardan etc. Easy access to road infrastructure mean enhanced processing due to specialized vehicles and less travel time.

Local cheese brands are available in large quantities, although I have my concerns over taste but it is available now in quantities.

While we have had a slow start our pace in this area at least is much faster than any other in the region, if I would to believe people in this business we will be exporting this commodity few years from now. Do bash around, criticize but also do research/meet people (right kind of people) who don't waste themselves in the negativity tide of our stupid media jokers or sponsored gangustani negativity.

We are slow starters but once we set our minds to something, we outpace anyone we want to. Over the next decade our processing and production capability will not just increase it will increase exponentially and then we will go into exports big time.

As far as Baluchistan is concerned, for the first time there is a better CM if things improve I see good things and news coming from there, SIND is another case I don't want to share insider news yet but rest assured sind too will be on the right track very soon.

I am keeping an eye with positive mind on faisalabad at one end I see a chain of dairy farms coming up spread all the way from bhera to sargodha to khushab to mianwali to talagang to Chakwal and on the other end M3 SEZ expanding all the way through Jaranwala to Sheikhupura.

Have faith and positivity.

Milk production is same in Punjab average buffalo or cow gives 6 or 7 liter milk daily
Those crossbreed cows which are better than HF are offspring of best Desi cows and HF bulls and those people who are crossbreeding high yielding Desi cows are actually destroying these breeds
Cattle of hot tropical/sub tropical regions is low yielding but is resistant to diseases and droughts
But high yielding western breeds can't survive here

well i am no expert but as far as i know our desi breed is not good milker even pure bred desi cow is not give at giving milk yes they can resist heat and diseases HF breed is worlds best when it comes to milking originating from USA many country have developed their own HF breed by crossing them with local breeds australia and dutch notability have done amazing with HF breed and exporting their cows all over the world including Pakistan as for local breed i dont know if you heard about Gir breed its a desi breed originating from Pakistan and India gir can resist high temperature and is crazy milker better than cross bred HF

brazilians took Gir and are now producing 50+ liters a day avg without climate controlled shed or anything i tried getting gir semens but our stupid govt dont allow gir semen import only HF allowed

HF is from Holland not USA and second most popular exotic breed in Pakistan Jersey
I think private companies import semen not government and some Sahiwal cows also produce above 20 liters milk

Pakistan's milk production will increase with time
People will keep high yielding cattle to increase their income industrialists will start investing in livestock business
Shahbaz Sharif has a milk company named Anhaar large dairy farms in different areas of Punjab chicken farms eggs broiler

yes things are changing and progressing at good rate in punjab but here in khi dairy industry is really struggling there are one or two good local brands but majority of producers are struggling cost of production is really high here we get everything from punjab that increases our cost of prodcution take corn silage for exaple it costs what 5-6 rs per kg to grow and store in punjab but landed cost khi is 9-13 rs depending on size of bale

I have heard Karachi farmers buy lactating cows from Punjab and at the end of lactation period they sell them and buy new ones
The price at which they are selling milk isn't giving them any profit or low profit that's why they mix powders this is not limited to Karachi entire Pakistan is same
