(Reuters) - Pakistan announced on Tuesday it had agreed with Iran to speed implementation of a much-delayed gas pipeline project designed to link Iran's giant South Pars gas field with consumers in South Asia.

The United States opposes the $7.5-billion project because it could violate sanctions imposed on Iran over nuclear activities Washington suspects are aimed at developing an atom bomb, although Tehran denies this.

In an announcement following a breakthrough pact between Iran and global powers,Pakistan said both sides would speed up work to finish construction of the pipeline.

"It was also agreed that a meeting will be held shortly between the experts of both sides to review parameters for accelerating work on IP Gas pipeline," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

It did not say when the pipeline would be completed.

Iran agreed with six world powers last month to curb its nuclear program in return for some easing of sanctions in a landmark pact seen as a first step towards resolving a decade-old dispute over the Middle Eastern nation's nuclear program.

Pakistan needs the pipeline from neighboring Iran, which sits on the world's largest reserves of gas, to alleviate severe energy shortages that have crippled the economy.

But it has made little progress on its section of the pipeline for lack of funds and warnings it could be in violation of U.S. sanctions.

Iran, for its part, has spent hundreds of millions of dollars and nearly completed the 900-km (560 mile) pipeline to the Pakistan border. Under the contract, Iran would export 21.5 million cubic meters of gas per day to Pakistan from next year.

This clearly serves Pakistani interests but what Iranian interests are being served by firing rockets in our territory i would like to know??

I hope Iran stops firing rockets and respects Pakistan sovereigny. We dont want to wreck relations with a brotherly neighbour.

On the other hand, I also believe that Pakistan should do everything they can to stop militans from killing Iranian border guards. Those came from Pakistan, and Pakistan is responsible for upholding security on their side of border and stop such activity.
Even if it was not Pakistani state that did this, the responsibility falls on the state if any militants from your side of the border compromise security.

In any case, we must solve issues through dialogue and cooperation. Iran and Pakistan have vast common economic interests.

Iran and Pakistan must cooperate to bring stability to the troubled Baloochestan regions.

Pakistan is already fighting a war for her survival and we have been the most affected country in this battle. I am not saying you should stay quiet and do absolutely nothing but firing rockets is the only alternative you found?? The last time it happened a young girl was killed and people justified that act. I am very surprised why this is happening all of a sudden and why the issue isn't pursued through diplomatic means instead of violating our sovereignty? I do appreciate you're comment though.

I agree with you. All alternatives must be exhausted before resorting to such response.
I heard about that girl being killed by an Iranian rocket, and it made me very sad and regretful. :(

Now its matter of Pakistan economic survival. In winter, CNG cut down for industry and transport to provide gas for domestic users. If close the industry then unemployment will and is increasing and plus if cut down supply to transport sector then daily commuters will pay high price. Its literally a matter of survival .

No need to escalate , i do hope that whatever issues we have with the terrorists running around, we can solve them out on the table and work together. There is zero need for any confrontation.

This pipeline will add 4000-5000mw power to PAkistani Grid.

Probably i believe this is the most fastest way for Pakistan to add upto 5000mw of electricity into its Grid

I read somewhere also that with this project Pakista will pay iran annually 3.6billion dollars as oppose to 5.4billion dollars of Oil is imported for the same purpose resulting saving of close to 2billion dollars

Dear I Think These Are Misunderstandings Which Can Be Resolved Through Track 2 Diplomacy. What We Have To Understand That The Pak Iran Border Is A Relatively Porous Region.Movement Is Relatively Easy. Many A Times Baloch Separatists Run Across The Border. This Has Happened In The Past When Baloch Separatists Fled To Iran And They Were Being Chased By Pakistani Law Enforcement,Pakistani Border Security Would Be Firing At Them Strait In To Iran. This Has Caused Misunderstanding But Can Be Resolved
