SHARM EL-SHEIKH: India has asked Pakistan to scrap the composite dialogue initiated about 15 years ago, urging a change in the format of talks between the two countries.

With the new proposal, New Delhi has hinted at removing the Sir Creek dispute from the agenda of talks and bringing about a change in the status of the Kashmir dispute. Highly-placed diplomatic sources told The News here on Wednesday that the talks between Pakistan and India had attained exceptionally crucial importance because the United States and its Western allies are keen to see a positive development in ties between the two countries in view of the war on terror.

The sources said that Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would be sticking to his one-point ‘agenda’ of dismantling the so-called network of terrorism and arresting those responsible for planning the Mumbai attacks. It is unlikely that India would agree to resume formal talks with Pakistan, the sources said.

They revealed that Pakistan was coming out for the first time with solid evidence with regard to Indian contacts with the Taliban. Gilani would hand over the evidence to the Indian prime minister, the sources said. The Pakistan government has also gathered proofs of Indian involvement in the Balochistan insurgency.

The diplomatic observers are of the view that the meeting to take place today (Thursday) on the sidelines of the 15th Non Aligned Movement (NAM) summit could prove to be a make-or-break interaction as Pakistan has already altered its policy that could be construed as any help to the elements having link with the extremists.

Online adds from New Delhi: Indian External Affairs Minister SM Krishna on Wednesday said that the key to resumption of the Indo-Pak composite dialogue would be Islamabad’s action against Jamaat-ud-Daawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed.

God knows when these Indian will understand, running away from these issue is providing more reason to these jehadi groups to strike inside India. Once they have seen successful attempt in Mumbai, if Indian govt do more mistakes, these people more frequently come back.
India is creating so much mess from Water issues, Dams, Kashmir, Sircreek,Siachin. Running away from issue not only problem for Pakistan, but also for India too.
Why India is creating so many hurdle for Pakistan, which already in fight against extremism .

Topgun, Haider and Salahdin, did any of you actually bother to read what the article says or you simply no longer require an excuse to beat your chest and rant.

The article says that India wants Pakistan to take credible action against known terrorists, stop making excuses (eg: lack of evidence, lol) and shut down terror camps that operate freely on its soil BEFORE formal talks on the ongoing dispute in Kashmir are resumed.

Interestingly, Pakistan has no trouble gathering evidence about Indian involvement in Balochistan and contacts with its mortal enemy the Taliban but is unable to buildup a strong enough case to put men like Hafiz Saeed behind bars.

.
Credible steps, CBMs etc etc...how long...it just too frustrating for the people on both side of Kashmir. What ever happened in Mumbai, its backlash of Indian aggressive policies in Kashmir. Again its hurting both countries. People been listen Shimla Accord, plebiscite ,CBMs...and now stern action to satisfied Indian demands...which will never happened...

Mr. Qsaark,

Why are you being so naive now. The mumbai incedent and kashmir freedom fighters are coming from your soil, technically your country men are attacking India (Declaration of war). As a Declaration of War India has the justification to use Soft and Hard Power.

Regarding Narendra Modi, that is India's internal matter, nothing to do with Pakistan, just like the recent attacks in China.

Regards.

Mumbai incident is debated to death, you have no proof. Kashmir is a disputed territory not India. So technically, there is no problem.

Has India offered any evidence linking Hafiz Saeed to the attacks?

As far as I know, India has only offered evidence linking Shah and Lakhvi to the attacks. The allegations against Saeed stem from his past associations with LeT and being the head of JuD.

Premier Gilani says peace with India 'achievable'

SHARM EL-SHEIKH: Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said Wednesday that relations with India were on the right track and that peace between the arch-foes was "achievable."

Premier was addressing participants at a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement at the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh ahead of a key meeting on Thursday with Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh.

"There has recently been some forward movement in our relations with India," Gilani told participants.

"We hope to sustain this momentum and move towards comprehensive engagement. We believe durable peace in South Asia is achievable," he said.

"Peace will be facilitated by the resolution of all outstanding disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir,"Gilani said.

New Delhi and Islamabad's fraught relations worsened after last year's bombings in the Indian commercial capital Mumbai, which killed 166 people.

The attacks were blamed by India on the banned Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Singh has voiced hope that Pakistan will promise action against those behind the attacks when he meets Gilani for the second high-level contact between the two sides since the Mumbai raids in November.

The Mumbai attacks left in tatters a fragile peace process launched in 2004 to resolve all outstanding issues of conflict between the neighbours, including a territorial dispute over the divided Himalayan territory of Kashmir.

Foreign ministry officials from India and Pakistan have been meeting since Tuesday in Sharm el-Sheikh ahead of the talks between the two prime ministers.

The head of the Indian delegation, foreign secretary Shiv Shankar Menon, told a press conference Wednesday night that talks with the Pakistani team were still continuing.

"We have had good detailed discussions. We are still in the process of talking to each other," he said.

Menon said Pakistan had given India a dossier on its investigations into the Mumbai attacks.

India, he said, wants "credible action to bring the perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to justice and credible actions to dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan."

Asked what action New Delhi expected of Islamabad, he said, "We are not in business of laying down markers. When we see credible action it speaks for itself."

The fight Pk is in against terrorism is of its own making. Something it went into & created with its eyes open. Zia started the rot, the nation accepted it. Subsequent leaders perfected it - now its pay back time.

As rgds othe other issues India too like all other nations cannot be faulted for thinking of itself 1st.

No one had a crystal ball at the time to predict the future. And the fallout was not merely a result of Pakistan, the US and Saudi Arabia supporting the Mujahideen, but of the abandonment of Afghanistan and the tensions between India and Pakistan.

One could argue that the real 'rot' was perhaps the Cold War - which led to the two superpowers jockeying for influence in Afghanistan. Perhaps even that might not have been as much of an issue, had Kashmir been resolved by then.

I therefore do not think it is correct to merely point at Zia's support for the Mujahideen or Islamising the State as the cause for the Taliban and terrorism problem in Pakistan today.

.
Good.. atleast something good from indians.. I hope we can resolve the issue ASAP. So we or india leaves no point for become enemies of each others. And development starts between both countries towards friendship. If both country clear this issue then i am sure both countries can reach such point where no western country ever reached. & who knows the stories like "american try to get immigration to india and pakistan" become true. :)

Pakistan, India reiterate their stated positions

Thursday, 16 Jul, 2009 | 05:00 AM PST |

SHARM EL SHEIKH: Indian and Pakistani leaders spelt out on Wednesday their ideas for ‘durable peace’ at the 15th Non-Aligned Movement summit with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling for the dismantling of terror networks and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani demanding resolution of outstanding disputes.

Their remarks at the summit in this Egyptian Red Sea resort indicate that they would stick to their stated positions in their meeting on Thursday designed to explore ways for normalisation of their relations that have remained strained since the 26/11 Mumbai attack.

This approach, it is feared, may spoil chances of rapprochement, particularly after a deadlock in talks between their foreign secretaries’ held a day earlier.

In his speech at the summit, Dr Singh called for action against terror groups and prosecution of terrorists.

Probably mindful of the controversy generated by remarks he made during a recent meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, he avoided a direct criticism of Pakistan, but there was little doubt among the audience comprising heads of state and governments and representatives of 118 NAM countries who the Indian prime minister was referring to.

‘The infrastructure of terrorism must be dismantled and there should be no safe haven for terrorists because they do not represent any cause, group or religion,’ Dr Singh said.

He said: ‘In recent years, terrorist groups have become more sophisticated, more organised and more daring. Terrorists and those who aid and abet them must be brought to justice.’

The main emphasis of Dr Singh’s speech at the summit held under the theme of ‘International solidarity for peace and development’ was on terrorism.

He said: ‘Extremism, intolerance and terrorism are our antitheses that seek to destroy us and our movement.’

India has made the resumption of Composite Dialogue conditional to Pakistan’s ‘visible and credible action’ against terror networks and prosecution of those accused of masterminding and abetting the Mumbai attacks.

Pakistan conversely has been demanding resumption of the stalled peace talks and sees it as key to resolution of the problems straining the ties between the two countries.

Prime Minister Gilani, who addressed the forum late in the evening, saw resolution of outstanding issues, particularly the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, as the way forward.

‘We believe durable peace in South Asia is achievable. It will be facilitated by resolution of all outstanding issues, including Jammu and Kashmir.’

Laying stress on resolution of disputes for ending terrorism, Mr Gilani said that only a ‘multi-dimensional strategy, particularly which addresses the root causes’ could be successful.

Urging India to join Pakistan in its efforts of bringing peace to the conflict-ridden region, Mr Gilani said: ‘The peace dividend for the 1.5 billion people in the region would be enormous.’

Referring to the engagement that the two countries have restarted including the foreign secretaries’ talks and his own scheduled interaction with the Indian premier, Mr Gilani said: ‘We hope to maintain this momentum and move towards composite engagement (in a reference to Islamabad’s desire for revival of Composite Dialogue).’

The prime minister enlisted efforts made by Pakistan’s for eliminating terrorism. ‘We are currently engaged in a resolute national effort to eliminate terrorism and militancy.

Our valiant security forces and the people of Pakistan have rendered enormous sacrifices in fighting this menace. Millions of our citizens have been recently dislocated.’

Mr Gilani proposed an eight-point programme for the cause of peace and development, including strict adherence to principles enshrined in the UN charter; strengthening multilateral system to curb unilateralist impulses and to advance the interests of all states in an equitable manner; re-designing the global institutional architecture on the basis of democracy, accountability and transparency; promoting the pacific settlements of disputes; developing a new global consensus covering arms control, disarmament and non-proliferation as well as access to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes; deepening South-South cooperation; paying urgent attention to the issue of climate change; and promoting inter-faith dialogue.
