In a surprise move, Pakistani prime minister has decided to import governor from the UK. Chaudhary M Sarwar, a British MP of Pakistani origin has been tipped to be the governor of Pakistan’s largest province, Punjab, a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz). According to reports, Pakistani president has been asked to formally approve the appointment.
According to Pakistani law, a foreign national cannot hold public office in Pakistan. To enable himself to take up the assignment, Sarwar is reportedly revoked his British nationality. The office of governor of a province is a ceremonial office but carries luxurious perks and privileges. Pakistani leaders are known for patronizing cronies and Sarwar is believed to have looked after Nawaz Sharif in his rainy days when he was in exile to escape the wrath of military leader, Musharraf who had dismissed his government in a military coup in October, 1999. Now Sharif wants to return the courtesy in the form of offering a coveted office to Sarwar.
The British government is known to have influence among Pakistani politicians for gaining a strong foothold in Pakistan. Another leader, Altaf Hussain, controls his party from London and has been hosted by the British government for controlling the affairs of Karachi. He is a fugitive from Pakistani law having numerous murder cases against him and has never returned to his home country in the last 21 years. A British newspaper, The Guardian, has carried a detailed report on the arrangements of British government with Altaf Hussain under the caption, Altaf Hussain, the notorious MQM leader who swapped Pakistan for London.
