Not to put too much stock on it but I have to say the Pakistani establishment has displayed remarkable restraint and maturity, rhetoric wise via-a-vis Kabul.

ISLAMABAD: Afghanistan’s National Security Advisor Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta’s accusation on Thursday that Pakistan’s intelligence agency had killed his brother, Ahmad Wali Tahiri, did not appear to greatly surprise Pakistan, as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially, appears to be getting used to such continued rhetoric on a daily basis from across the border, for which there is no proof provided.

“The foreign elements are training and hiding some people in Peshawar and Quetta. After the training, they are sent on terror missions and they kill our brothers, sisters and relatives,” Dr Spanta complained to the Afghan media.

“Pakistan would want to see a peaceful, stable, and prosperous Afghanistan,” spokesman at the Foreign Office told The News in response to Spanta’s accusations. These accusations came on the eve of the first visit of a senior diplomat of the new government in Islamabad to Kabul.

Adviser on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz flies to Kabul at the head of a small delegation tomorrow (Saturday) to start high level deliberations with President Hamid Karzai, and also prepare for his visit to Islamabad.

But lately, there appears to be nothing that Pakistan doesthat is not criticised by Kabul making some of the charges really outlandish.Dr Spanta said the leaders of the Taliban are sheltered in Pakistan and the country is controlling their operations.

While talking at the funeral, he added that the Taliban members who went to Qatar for negotiating with the Afghan government possessed Pakistani passports and they flew from Pakistan to reach Qatar.

“For over 11 years, Pakistan has always been telling the United Nations that it does not know the whereabouts of the Taliban leader. But, nobody asked those Taliban members who visited Qatar about their identities or anything about their nationality (passport),” said Dr Spanta.

“There are only two options: Firstly, the armed opposition groups should voluntarily join the peace process, and secondly, if they choose not to join, then our security forces will fight and eliminate them completely,” warned Dr Spanta.

However, the spokesman at the Foreign Office did not offer any comment on remarks by Karzai’s chief of staff Karim Khorram, who told the local media that the Taliban office in Doha was a plot to break up Afghanistan orchestrated by either Pakistan or the United States. “I have not seen Khorram’s statement,” the spokesman said.

“The opening of the Qatar office, the way it happened, was a plot and Afghanistan foiled that plot and this plot was aimed at splitting or breaking up Afghanistan,” said Karim Khorram. He added that Afghanistan has concerns about US closeness with Pakistan, especially over issues linked to Afghanistan.

Sartaj Aziz will be assisted by Pakistan’s Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, and maybe these two Pakhtun diplomats can speak in a language that Karzai understands.

You cant wipe Afghanistani people. The only issue there is internal power wrengling which is exploited by outsiders including US/Russia/India/Pakistan/Iran.

Indeed the region has become a headache for all.

Its about time all countries/stakeholders sit togather and do something decisive, else this is going rot all of us to hell. I am sure the big guys will not be affected much. Espcrially India and Pakistan who will sufffer the most!!..

So lets just pray.

Well I certainly hope my cousin doesn't get called to do the dirty work to confront the Taliban

... perhaps your cousin would be interested?

How about putting up a plan togather including you and me where our cousins dont even have to do any such dirty work afterall???

Please dont club India into this for anything. In all this its only Pakistan and Afghanistan that is affected and suffering and is going to suffer. India is merely a onlooker waiting to grab piece of cake

That again put us to the same question, and both the answer and discussion there after will not be in the interest of the topic. India's main focus is economic stability of that region and rightfully so. because it gives India an option to deal with other factors in a better way(like oil from Iran, more trade etc)+ It is our own apprehension lead interest that If A'stan is stable then India and Pakkistan can deal with each other alone. Its better to have solved one problem out of two. Now the onus is on you, what you do as a country lead by professional intetest to safegurad your own people as you have the biggest influence over the people of Afghanistan will be something to be watched in the coming future.

I for once and last will only hope that our regions becomes stable and we have time to focus on ourselves than watching others for a mistake that is not ours.

India just like others want economic stability only if the players to its liking are ruling there. So lets NOT play with fancy words. Its all about own interests. If tomorrow its in Indian interests to supply weapons to Taliban against Pakistan then India will do so as well.

The region can only be stable if all the players in Afghan power game are given equal rights

:)Fair enough. But If India will give Taliban weapon tomorrow against Pakistan then what would have lead India to do so? I repeat again, You have good influence in that region so why not use it for that equal rights? and close the chapter there?

The main issue is that we are afraid that Pakistan will use the Taliban against India?

.
All powers are playing chess in Afghanistan but real loser is Afghan people.
There is no chance to give equal right to Taliban who does not believe in democracy or civility. Only thing which they are eligible to recieve are a bullet in their head.

Your misplaced fears are driving you to adopt wrong policies.

Taliban or for that matter Afghans had never been used or got used against India. And knowing my region and people i believe this is misplaced fear i dont who put in India for reasons.

Anyway as far as we are concerned since we are direct stakholder as well as the direct affectee of the conflict indeed have influence and we are doing all our efforts to give every group its rights.

Now its up to the people of that region to realise and stand up.

I think that is a very laudable goal but unfortunately it has no basis in reality.

Further there is a mismatch between the imagination that your approach demands and the level of imagination that the current stakeholders in India/Pakistan/Afghanistan possess which is very little and will not change over the remainder of this decade and possibly even the next decade.

One possible approach is to think small the-little-idea - one that I can think of is:
1. Delink Afg/India thus you have two problems Afg/Pak and Pak/India - this is a simpler set of equations to balance.
2. The Lack of access to Afghanistan is a negative for India but will not do anything to stem India's rise as a great power
3. Normalizing relationships with Pakistan is much more of consequence to help propel India to a great power status
4. For India the equation could be something like this: for the next two decades forget about Afghanistan but Gain Pakistan
5. Symmetrically normalizing relations with India for Pakistan is the single most important foreign policy issue for Pakistan
6. This will leave (an abandoned) Afghanistan to come to terms with Pakistan on what may be considered Natural terms which will may mean playing second fiddle for Afghanistan to both Iran and Pakistan but it will give peace a chance and in 20 or so years a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan can seek to reset the balance with both Iran and Pakistan

Absent such a simplification:
1. India will not be able to normalize it's relationship with Pakistan and vis-a-vis
2. India will get sucked into Afghanistan with no gain of any sort
3. Pakistan will remain in turmoil
4. Afghanistan will continue a decent into a new abnormal and has the most to loose

.
So, who can help us understand why it is important or right, that Pakistan ignore hostile statements coming from Afghan govt officials?
