LAHORE, Feb 12, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- DIDCF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Senior Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmad has said that the importance of solar energy as an inexhaustible, pollution-free and cheap source of energy, particularly for a developing economy like Pakistan, could hardly be emphasized. The government is giving special attention to maximum investment in energy sector and the investors should launch new power projects to overcome the energy needs.
He was talking with a group of investors which called on him at his office here Tuesday. "Pakistan comes in the solar belt and the solar energy intensity in the Sun Belt is approximately 1800-2200 KWh per square meter."

"The solar energy resources for our country are about 100,000 megawatts as Pakistan is the 6th luckiest country in the world where sun-availability is up to 16 hours on average," he told.

And according to international estimates, Punjab is the most suitable place for setting up solar energy projects, he added.

Raja maintained that energy self-sufficiency is a must for the industrial development of any nation today. The importance of developing solar energy as an alternative energy source for sun-friendly country like Pakistan where sun shines for over 300 days a year could meet the energy needs of the whole country.

Pakistan has an ideal climate to generate solar and wind energy, he said. Besides abundance of sunny days, the intensity of solar radiation is also very high, roughly 500 watts per square meter at ground level. This huge solar energy potential is waiting to be exploited through proper R&D, he observed.

Tapping solar energy may be the cost-effective, environment-friendly and pollution free choice as the only alternative energy source for Pakistan which enjoys both good quantity and quality of sunshine, he concluded.

i hope this is implemented ASAP.

And i also wish that these thing getting installed in the Punjab doesn't give the 'idiots' another excuse to raise issues against the Punjabis and others, and another wave of propaganda is not awaken.

This project MUST not meet the fate like Kalabagh Dam!!!

Who is gonna Implement them, its like "who will tie the Bell in Cat's Neck". I hope projects are implemented this time and relief may be provided to poor people of Pakistan.

I hope GoP will take such steps in Order to Make the wheels of the Country Running Again. I also hope that Zaradari Wont ask for some percentage in order to Implement such Projects.

Agreement between Iran and Pakistan for 1,000 MW of wind energy

The wind power agreement was signed by Sanir, which will implement the wind farm in the Pakistani province of Sindh in joint venture with a local private company.

Sanir, an Iranian public company, signed a joint-venture agreement for the construction, with a Pakistani private company, of a 1,000 MW wind farm in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh.

The agreement was announced by Ahmad Fasih, Commercial Counselor of Iran in Karachi, at a meeting with members of the Pakistani Federation of Chambers of Commerce.

Although Fasih did not provide details, he emphasized that Iran is currently the only country in the region with the technological capability allowing it to develop wind turbines on its own.

Also, it has the "know how" that is necessary to support Pakistan in the construction of any other type of power plant, as well as transport infrastructure such as highways or railways, and large residential complexes and commercial buildings.

Last year Sanir was already awarded a contract for the construction of another 50-MW wind power plant in Pakistan and for the development of electricity infrastructure.

Iran and Armenia has signed also an agreement for SANIR Co to construct four wind turbines units in Armenia in the next two months.

The capacity of the wind farm is 2.5 MW experimentally and it is the first of the wind power plant that Iran is to construct outside its borders.

Iran and Armenia signed a memorandum of understanding to bolster bilateral cooperation in the field of electricity. The agreement was signed by Iran’s Energy Minister Habibollah Bitaraf and his Armenian counterpart Armen Movsisyan.

and at night u use power from batteries

It is volts not watts
Each solar cell produces 0.5 volts between 0.5 and 4 watts depending on design and size of cell. An array of solar cell is used to assemble a solar panel which can give output anywhere between 6-48 volts and 60-300 watts again depending on design of the panel. Several solar panels are grouped in series or parallel to achieved the desired output. The largest inefficiency of solar is conversion from high ampere DC to high voltage low ampere AC. The conversion process losses lots of energy as heat and magnetic flux. A more efficient and cost effective utilization of solar electricity would be to design your home and appliances in contrast which makes it only applicable to new homes. We are working on such solutions as we are "hell bent" on launching solar based cooling systems for residential and commercial purpose as this is a very big market around Pakistan. A lot of R/D is taking place and soon we intend to hire engineering students as paid interns for further assistance. Many local partners and international suppliers are in the league to provided needed electronics and spares.

The reason why solar panels are expensive is owing to their transportation cost which requires a lot of delicate handling. We have assessed the feasibility of producing solar panels locally in Pakistan and still researching low cost assembly methods. Our aim is to provide 5Kw of energy in 5-6 lac coupled with our "designed for solar" line of home appliances one can expect to run entire lighting, medium fridge, TV and 0.75 ton air conditioner on our 5Kw solar package.

Didn't i told you Baluchistan and Sindh are best for wind, while all of Pakistan is best for solar.
Dams, we need to save our self from the black mail of floods.

While most savings come from solar.
Obviously you can't see it because you are not from the profession and cannot visualize the whole system involved to light a lamp in your house.

Problem is not that no one in Pakistan knows the potential, problem is the IMF dictated Zardari.

We have to think why whole world's financial institutions are hell bent to lend loans, grants and aids to the most corrupt man known to the mankind.

Afterall, what do they see so trust worth in Zardari which they failed to see in all the leaders in history of Pakistan.

Dear govt. don't have to implement it.
They simply need to encourage it by shedding import duties on solar panels but they will not do it until some politician will start importing it.
or IMF finds a way to get profit out of your personal life.

Like I said before,

I am in favour of having solar equipments

But I am not in favour of having solar panels for electricity at the moment (on government scale, independent projects are most welcome as they have nothing to do with government funding).

Any sensible analyst will tell you that the solar energy is currently most expensive out of hydro, coal, gas, oil, nuclear, wind etc.

If you do not agree please create one thread, I am in good mood so may be we can discuss this topic in full detail (also for future references)

Solar power is not cost effective for a poor country like Pakistan....Same with wind power...The turbines are usually mounted with Gear box and Generator of their own,and that is the most expensive component.Plus wind power is not constant..Winds blows sometimes and doesn't blow at other times..Sometimes wind is strong and at other times wind is weak..and unlike water,wind cannot be stored.

I was thinking of a rather weird method of power generation by wind....We have coastal mountains in Baluchistana nd Dam can be built there...
We can build large wind turbine farms,and instead of fitting each Turbine with a Generator of it's own,we fit them with water Pump,which is easily available and manufactured in Pakistan.
The wind Turbine turns a water pump and pumps water uphill into the dam..This dam will collect pumped sea water,and then use the potential energy of stored water to generate electricity via one or few large land based Hydel Turbine generators...In effect we are building a seaside dam and storing Seawater instead of River water and the sea water is pumped into the dam by low cosy water pumps driven by Wind Turbines...That way wind power can be stored..When the wind is strong the turbines will pump more water into the dam,which can be used later.
