MEXICO CITY: Pakistan has every right to develop its own missile programme provided it complies with relevant international obligations, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Sputnik in an interview, commenting on Islamabad's latest launch.

On Thursday, Pakistan conducted a successful test launch of Shaheen-II surface-to-surface ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, according to the Pakistani Armed Forces' spokesman Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor.

"Countries that develop their missile programs should act in accordance with relevant international obligations. We do not see any obstacles for Pakistan to develop its missile program," Ryabkov said.

The diplomat recalled that there were certain export control regimes and other obligations as part of international treaties.

"We are against measures that could lead to an escalation of the situation, including in such a sensitive region as South Asia, but in this case we believe that every state has a sovereign right to take care of its own security," he added.

. . . .
I wish we could have developed excellent relations with Russia back in the day.

Instead we chose the American snake who bit us many times and gave us Afghan refugees as a gift.

Never too late. It is a good thing we ditched the rednecks. Time to focus on strengthening our relationship with the likes of Russia.

You know I think this may be Russia's way of saying that we should not bother trying to buy its military products. Perhaps we were too insistent on discounts so they got tired of us and this is a polite way of telling us off.

Why this missile test is important???

Probably sending a message to India or the Pak civilian govt. In the case of the latter there's talk of cutting the defence budget so military flexes its muscles to make sure that doesn't happen.

But relations between Russia and India are good. If Pakistan wants to approach Russia and buy Russian weapons, India won't be sitting there doing nothing.

Military cooperation between Russia(FSU) and India has lasted for 50 years.

:DIndia & Russia have no stronger diplomatic relations than China & Russia. Russia has been hoping for a substantial military alliance with China since 2008. (But the Chinese are reluctant to form military alliances.

Pakistan, Russia and Germany are the top three important partners of China.

Actually, I am very supportive of expanding cooperation between Russia and Pakistan. If China, Russia, Pakistan and India can live together peacefully and develop together, that would be great.

Just an idea ... if Brahmos is so potent, could China or Pakistan buy it from Russia to reduce the unnecessary hype about it in SouthEast Asia?
The scenario will be also for everyone's interest 'Brahmos VS Brahmos'.
