There is a direct co-relation between the personal repression in a society and how fast it adopts internet access.

In other words, the more personal repression a society exhibits (higher repression index), the faster its people will get on to the internet (faster adoption rate).

There are a number of reasons for this phenomenon, but the chief socio-psychological factor is this:

Rate of adoption depend on many aspects, the biggest being the size of the middle class, as the middle class is the one who can afford computers and internet access at first. Lower income people gravitate towards internet Cafes and such.

And of course there is the technical issues like actually getting the lines and what not set up. Remember, there is no internet without cables.

I dont go by number of idiots wasting time in internet for time pass only which I have seen in many of the cyber cafe. I know only one thing, My parents, sister and my all relatives all are in Facebook and gmail at least and that happened in past 3-4 years. We can chat, video chat, share pics through yahoo messenger and share you tube videos. They can "google" and look for some disease, country etc.I would like to say "Thanks" to internet else I would never ever get a chance to move to many countries without connecting them.

Rate of adoption do depend on many aspects, but the usage of internet also depends on choice of the population.
