Pakistan has completed the construction of the Chashma nuclear power plant II with cooperation from China and the plant has started to produce 100MW of power on a trial basis, which is expected to increase to 300MW in 20 days, from a design capacity of 325MW. The project was completed ahead of schedule in a five-year period and has been connected to the national grid.
The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission has said that construction of two more reactors at the same site, also with Chinese assistance, has been started and that they will be completed in the next five to seven years. Work is also underway to boost the capacity of the already operating reactors. A senior government official said that the country would install 10 such plants for which six sites have been selected, to boost Pakistans nuclear power capacity to 8800MW over a span of 22 years. Pakistan is planning to build a nuclear fuel complex at a cost of PKR51.298bn (US$606m) to locally produce the fuel that will be used by the new plants.
