ISLAMABAD - With the US and Pakistani officials engaged in crucial talks on the use of NATO supply lines running through Pakistan for the withdrawal of US-led western troops from Afghanistan, Islamabad may seek an agreement with Washington for the purchase of the leftover military equipment.
Currently, Islamabad and Washington are engaged in talks through diplomatic channels to sort out issues related to the use of NATO supply routes through Pakistani soil for the withdrawal of thousands of troops and military equipment, like the security of supplies and also what material could be transited and what could not.
The talks are mainly aimed at a smooth and safe transit of NATO supplies through Pakistan once thousands of vehicles start moving out of Afghanistan for which a deadline of 2014 has been set by the United States. As the US and its allies shape up its plan for the troops’ withdrawal, reports in western media suggest that some regional states like Uzbekistan have showed interest in clinching a deal with the United States for the supply of war leftovers and in return the western powers would be provided with the roads.
According to one such report that appeared in New York Times recently, Uzbek officials have quietly contacted American, German and British officials with the offer, in their latest bid to supplement their military despite international embargoes.
Diplomatic sources privy to latest developments on the front of US-Pakistan relations said like Uzbekistan, Pakistan might also seek an agreement with the United States for the supply of military equipment that the US-led western forces could not take back from Afghanistan.
They said that just like Iraq where the US troops had to face high costs of shipping the used military equipment, which even exceeded their real value, the US authorities could face the same situation in Afghanistan.
“Such situation in Afghanistan is likely to compel the US to seek alternatives and one such alternative could be to sell the leftover military equipment to Islamabad. After all the US authorities would not like these latest weapons and equipment to fall into the hands of the Taliban,” said a source, seeking anonymity.
He said Pakistan might also show interest in the purchase of some war leftovers that it believed were vital for boosting its defense capabilities.
A Pakistani official confirmed the talks being held with the US for the use of NATO supply routes for the US led foreign troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan and all related matters. However, he did not comment on the possibility of talks for a deal between Islamabad and Washington for the sale of war leftovers to Pakistan.
He said Pakistan and the US were key allied nations in the anti-terrorism global campaign and it was hoped that they would be able to work out a mutually acceptable mechanism for the use of NATO supply lines for the troops’ withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Take the equipments if they offer at throw away prices.

So you wanna buy second hand equipment that's been buggered for several years in Afghanistan? Don't behave like beggars. Go buy new equipment that would last you for at least 10 years more, and where you'd not need to depend on spares to keep on putting these used items in action.

Penny wise, pound foolish, as the saying goes. And then you can get Chinese stuff that would be far cheaper than the junk that the US would be leaving behind in Afghanistan! :cheesy:

Afghanistan is unstable. The Americans would fear those weapons getting in the hands of Taliban.

Same is the case with Pakistan with two possibilities

a) It can hand those over to Taliban to keep fighting with ANA which does not go along well with American plans.
b) There is a good possibility of the weapons being outsourced to Pakistan's friendly neighbor for reverse engineering. I am sure Americans are quite wary of that possibility.

So end result - Pakistan can eye American equipment but the possibility of them getting them is rather low!!

America wants ANA to become stronger and will do what ever to help them !!

What exactly is it Pakistan could possibly need from NATO used war weaponry, it's not like they are going to supply anything sophisticated most of it will be firearms and other light weapons.

.
Well its not a bad idea, Pakistan should buy the equipments because these equipments will be for a very, very low price & it will serve Pak Army really well. So in my opinion Pakistan should go for it, whereas on the other side Afghan Military most probably will get a lot of these equipments for free & US will prefer giving these equipments to dumb Afghanis.

The A-10s would be a nice addition to PAF for ground support. But I highly doubt that the US will agree to sell those to Pakistan.

The first point contradicts the second. If the US agrees to provide anything more sophisticated than assault rifles, then there is no chance of that hardware landing in Taliban hands. It would be a disaster on so many fronts.

Second, if the US limits the sale to small arms etc, then there is absolutely no need for China to reverse-engineer it.

Third, the ANA is a lost cause. The US seems reluctant to help them sufficiently today, let alone provide high-tech hardware later on.

It is an oppiritnity for the PA for sure. Granted the US will be leaving a hell of a lot behind for the ANA this is part of the official plans to build up the ANA/ANP. Then all the really "good" stuff -the most expensive and latest will be shipped to US basses all over the world. The remaining equipment wherin It Is simply uneconomical to ship it to US bases could be up for grabs. IIRC the ROK has done some brisk business with the US on this front-they got a few hundred ex-Iraq War US army MRAPs for 1/100th of the price the US paid for them brand new.

Granted most of the kit that will be on the table for Pakistan will be the very oldest and most archaic equipment but if the PA can see utility in buying such equipment- go for it!

those weapons would be treasure chest for Pak.

1)State of the art intelligence devices.
2) precession equipment
3)Armoured vehicles.
4)bunker buster's
many more...........

would love to see 50 cal sniper Barrett's with P.Forces would defiantly be a night mare for PAK's enemies.

no we should not drop these and go 4 Chinese as we can have them any-time.

Go 4 it.
