Pak vs Eng:
England to announce new squad after 7 test positive for coronavirus

England will announce a new squad for the upcoming ODI series against Pakistan after seven members of the team tested positive for coronavirus Tuesday.

Three players and four support staff members test positive for coronavirus, confirmed the England Cricket Board (ECB).

The team will now be led by Ben Stokes, as most of the players will undergo isolation.

England play Pakistan in the first ODI in Cardiff on Thursday, July 8.

England skipper Eoin Morgan had earlier said it would be too soon to consider Stokes as a member of the playing XI. The all-rounder was out of the squad for the past several weeks due to an injured finger.

The rest of the new team to face Pakistan will be named later on Tuesday.

'We have been prepared for this moment, and mindful that the emergence of the Delta variant, along with our move away from the stringent enforcement of bio secure environments, could increase the chances of an outbreak," said ECB Chief Executive Tom Harrison.

"We made a strategic choice to try to adapt protocols, in order to support the overall wellbeing of our players and management staff who have spent much of the 14 months living in very restricted conditions.

"Overnight we have worked swiftly to identify a new squad, and we are grateful to Ben Stokes who will return to England duties to captain.

"We also recognise the impact this news will have on our first-class counties and their men's playing squads and thank them, along with our partners Sky and Royal London, for their ongoing support in dealing with this pandemic.''

The Royal London ODI Series

1st ODI: England v Pakistan, Thursday 8 July 2021, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.

2nd ODI: England v Pakistan, Saturday 10 July 2021, Lord’s Cricket Ground, London.

3rd ODI: England v Pakistan, Tuesday 13 July 2021, Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The Pakistan team has already reached England to play a T20I and ODI series and had remained in isolation in Derby after which they had started their training.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam had said that the England series would be helpful in the team's preparation for the World Cup and warned that England is not an easy opponent.

Skipper Azam said Pakistan's performance in the previous tours had been good, however, he warned of any complacency.

"The English team will not be an easy opponent on their home ground. This is a good opportunity for World Cup preparation."

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Tuesday expressed satisfaction over the health and safety of its players after the assurances and guarantees provided by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

In an official statement on Tuesday, the PCB said that they have been in close contact with the ECB since the news of the Covid-19 outbreak in the England camp was shared with it on late Monday evening.

“The PCB is satisfied by the assurances and guarantees provided by the ECB on behalf of its medical panel, and feels comfortable with the existing protocols that have been put in place to ensure all the Pakistan players and player support staff remain safe and secure throughout the duration of the series, which commences on Thursday, 8 July, in Cardiff.”

The board is also in constant connection with its team management and has advised them to exercise extra caution while in the hotel or at the match venue.

The development came forth on Tuesday after ECB announced that four of their management staff members and three players had returned positive tests following a PCR test in Bristol on Monday, after which the entire England squad was forced into isolation.

The board, however, insisted that the ODI and T20 series against Pakistan will go ahead as planned despite the outbreak. However, an entirely different 18-strong team led by Ben Stokes will face Pakistan.

All-rounder Stokes has been out of action since injuring his finger at the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. He had been taking time off for complete rehabilitation ahead of the World T20 and Ashes 2021.

The ECB said it was hoping at least some of the isolating players would be available to play the Twenty20 matches against Pakistan scheduled on July 16, 18 and 20.

Managing Director of England Cricket, Ashley Giles, said captaining the side will be a huge honour for Ben who will be leading England’s ODI side for the first time.

Ashley also thanked Pakistan Cricket Board on behalf of the ECB for their support and understanding during this time.

Guess Pak team has run into luck again after first facing a weakened SA team in SA :p:. Chalo hopefully the good players will cement their spots and not the bad ones.

Apparently we are to play an insane amount of T20's right before the World T20 (3 against England now in England, 5 in West Indies, then 2 against England in Pak and then possibly 5 against NZ in Pak!) so that should be good practice and hopefully enough time to cement a final XI.

Damn, terrible batting performance. Even if there was no match practice, this was literally a 3rd string English bowling attack, there was no excuse for anything below 200. I'm confident we'll come back stronger but these lackluster starts really have to be dealt with.

England XI thrashed Pakistan by nine wickets in the first ODI at Cardiff on Thursday to take a 1-0 lead in a three-match series.

Playing first, Pakistan set 142 runs target after English bowlers took quick wickets as they led an attack against Pakistan.

In response, England XI after a coronavirus outbreak within the originally selected squad finished on 142-1 with more than 28 overs remaining.

Dawid Malan was 68 not out and Zak Crawley 58 not out, the pair sharing an unbroken stand of 120,
Earlier, fast bowler Saqib Mahmood took an ODI best 4-42 as Pakistan were dismissed for 141 with more than 14 overs of their innings left.

CARDIFF: Saqib Mahmood marked his return to England duty with a four-wicket haul as the completely changed hosts put their COVID-19 problems behind them with an emphatic nine-wicket win over Pakistan in the first One-Day International at Cardiff on Thursday.

Player of the match Mahmood took an ODI best 4-42 as Pakistan were skittled out for just 141 with more than 14 overs left to bat. England, the reigning 50-over world champions, finished on 142-1 to go 1-0 up in a three-match series ahead of Saturday’s clash at Lord’s.

Dawid Malan was 68 not out after a run-ball fifty. Together with Test batsman Zak Crawley (58 not out), one of five ODI debutants in the England team, he shared an unbroken stand of 120 as a match scheduled for 100 overs finished in a mere 67.1 overs.

England were fielding a completely changed XI from their previous ODI -- the first time this had happened to any side in the 50-year history of the format -- after a COVID-19 outbreak within their existing squad during a recent 2-0 series win at home to Sri Lanka required all 16 players originally selected to play against Pakistan to self-isolate.

In addition, injuries to the likes of fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Olly Stone and wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler meant they were effectively without two first-choice XIs.

Yet their ‘C team’ dominated from the moment Mahmood took a wicket with the first ball of the match -- and then dismissed Pakistan captain Babar Azam, the world’s top-ranked ODI batsman, for a duck with the third ball.

Such was England’s command, stand-in captain Ben Stokes bowled just one over despite the World Cup-winner being the most experienced member of the attack. England made a sensational start when Mahmood snared Imamul Haq lbw with the first ball after a review ordered by Stokes confirmed the delivery had pitched in line.

Two balls later, Mahmood had a prize wicket when Babar edged to Crawley at second slip, with Pakistan yet to score a run. And when Mahmood had Pakistan debutant Saud Shakeel lbw for five, the tourists were 26-4 from seven overs.

But Fakhar Zaman counter-attacked to the delight of Pakistan fans in a crowd limited to 2,251 by Welsh government virus restrictions. The left-handed opener hit several fine boundaries, including a superb straight drive off debutant fast bowler Brydon Carse.

New batsman Sohaib Maqsood, in his first ODI for five years, flat-batted Carse over extra-cover for six. But a promising stand of 53 ended in farcical fashion when non-striker Sohaib, lured down the pitch by the advancing Fakhar’s call for a single, was undone when his partner suddenly stopped, with James Vince running him out for 19. Pakistan, restricted to intra-squad rather than tour matches, badly needed the in-touch Fakhar to keep going.

However, his innings of 47, including six fours, ended tamely when a miscued cut off leg-spinner Matt Parkinson lobbed gently to backward point. And when Mahmood had Faheem Ashraf caught behind, Pakistan were 101-7.

England debutant opener Phil Salt -- born in Wales but now with Sussex -- fell cheaply when he edged Shaheen Shah Afridi to first slip. But Malan made a run-a-ball fifty, with Crawley -- following a run of low scores at Test level -- even quicker to the landmark. Brief scores: Pakistan 141, 35.2 overs (S Mahmood 4-42, Fakhar Zaman 47). England 142-1, 21.5 overs (D Malan 68no, Z Crawley 58no). Result: England won by nine wickets.

Typical poor performance by Pakistan. It is certain Pakistan always lose the first match when they tour.
It is embarrassing to lose to a low level team. Reminds the time when British university students played Pakistan and nearly beat them in a warm up match.
