1979: PEOPLE THOUGHT PAKISTAN WILL BE OVERRUN BY SOVIET UNION

1998: PEOPLE THOUGHT PAKISTAN WON'T SURVIVE (AFTER THE INDIAN NUCLEAR TESTS)

yet we enter 2011 InshAllah stronger than we were ever in the last 5 years so people can keep dreaming and wishing! but we will keep praying to our all mighty who will always watch over us!!

Ok, so it seems like Pakistan has gone from one crises to another since its creation, each time surviving but never getting out of these unfortunate cycles.....So Pakistan as a nation never seems learns from its mistakes....I fail to see how that is something to be proud of. will you keep on "surviving" like this for the next 100 years and still be proud?

dont mistake this for a troll post. I keep hearing pakistanis being proud of surviving crises, but shouldnt you guys ask yourself why the country jumps from one crises to another in the first place?

Each and every crisis was thrown upon Pakistan.

Do you think Pakistan wanted to fight the Soviet Union? Do you think Pakistan wanted 20 million to be effected by flooding? Do you think Pakistan wanted a cold war in south asia?

Each outcome is the result of a decision taken on the problem.

yeah, but pakistan fought the soviets cos the decision was made by the general in charge, no? same with WOT, the decisions was made by a general, not the people of pakistan. cold war in south asia, is anybody forcing you to fight for kashmir? Flooding, nobody can control the nature, but the damage could somehow have been less had the policy makers of pakistan not neglected water management, i.e dam building, for so many years, no?

someone has to take responsibility for the decisions made by pakistan, you cant blame it all on bad luck, can you?

this does not only apply for pakistan, the whole south asia region is in a mess cos nobody takes any responsibility for the mistakes made on governing the countries. we always blame others, its in our blood.

gulfnews : Pakistan ends 2010 as sick man of South Asia

Military bugbear

Worse yet, the military remains outside civilian control. General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani's term in office, which was set to expire in November, was extended by three years. Thus empowered, the general has been able to exert his influence over foreign policy, in particular in defining the country's relations with the US, India, and Afghanistan. Even though the US offered $2 billion of assistance to the military to be disbursed over a period of 3-5 years, Kayani has resisted American pressure to move against the Taliban's sanctuary in North Waziristan, used to stage operations against US and Nato troops in southern and eastern Afghanistan..

this has been discussed to death already.. Pak Army had explained to late Holbrooke and Gen Petrious, they said that Kiyani assured that Pak Army will launch the operation at the right time once its position in SW is consolidated, as current circumstances, terrain, mobility and available manpower doesnt allow the operation yet. there is no reluctance far from it.. Pakistan Army will like to finish the job.. there is no love for any type of taliban or other foreign terrorists who are using Pakistan's soil to plan and attack other countries.

yes 2010 was a tough year but we managed it.. a Turkish colleague of mine said to me once.. we lost over a million people but it didnt break our resolve.. and look where we are now...

some unnamed American "ANALyst" predicted some year ago that Pakistan wont last a 6 months.. he and his kind were coming out of nowhere giving these predictions on every major terror attack on Pakistan and then dying (ANALytically) in obscurity

breaking and dismantling one myth and propaganda at a time!

i say it time and time again, history will judge who was righteous; who made the right decisions and who didn't.

Irfan bhai -- Turkiye is the best model for Pakistan. In 1970s and 1980s, Ankara was a very dangerous people for politicians (especially leftists). As in Karachi, there was target killing every hour (forget every day). Istanbul was dealing with suicide bombing campaign by PKK terrorists. Inflation was intermittently flying through the roof. A lot of people predicted bleak future for Turkiye.

Today, it's an emerging market with export-led growth; strong domestic market and consumption; good security; very professional armed forces, etc.

they still have their issues but they have done very well in a relatively short period of time (about 10 years)...

all it takes is a good, strong leadership......and NOT electing crooked, corrupt people

among other things

in their early times all nations go through difficult times.

but pakistan will survive, and because it will survive it will learn and become stronger.

these first 60 years are just a drop in the ocean compared to the future.

make no mistake, for some people in this world the continual existence of pakistan is a loss to them initself.

.
I would say wisest move of all political parties is, not creating any problem for PPP and letting them complete 5 years. If PPP don't complete the tenure then they will again play innocent game to come back in power. Two more years of suffering and then next one will be little better.

Do you even know what the cold war was? Join the Yanks or join the Commies. Pakistan joined the Yanks. India joined the commies.

same with WOT, the decisions was made by a general, not the people of pakistan.

I don't think anyone besides conspiracy theorists oppose Pakistans war on the Taliban and its allies.

cold war in south asia, is anybody forcing you to fight for kashmir?

Cold war had nothing to do with Kashmir. It had everything to do with nuclear stockpiling and political expansion.

Flooding, nobody can control the nature, but the damage could somehow have been less had the policy makers of pakistan not neglected water management, i.e dam building, for so many years, no?

The last time a flood of comparable calibre happened in Pakistan was in 1920's or so. It does not have much to do with infastructure, but if there was infastructure, the damage could have been less. You have a point on this one.

someone has to take responsibility for the decisions made by pakistan, you cant blame it all on bad luck, can you?

Pakistans geographic location has made it a hotspot for war and strife. Even before Pakistan was made, we can see that the land was almost always in turmoil from invaders, disasters, and war.

yes india was on soviets side, but india never took part in any direct war on behalf of soviet, pakistan and its military dictators did on behalf of usa.

going by the opinion on this forum, there seems to bee a lot of those who oppose this war.

Cold war had nothing to do with Kashmir. It had everything to do with nuclear stockpiling and political expansion.

tell that to the people who say that the only problem between india and pakistan is kashmir. "solve kashmir, and there will be peace in south asia" they say.

thank you. thats also what i said, you cant stop nature but you can control the damage

Pakistans geographic location has made it a hotspot for war and strife. Even before Pakistan was made, we can see that the land was almost always in turmoil from invaders, disasters, and war.

not saying that geopolitics have not had any influence, just making the point that pakistan as a nation and its leaders have to take the responsibility as well. cant blame it all on external powers and say that we always survive. at some point just surviving wont cut it anymore.

anyway my opinion does mean jack bro, so cheers! was just answering to the guys who were proud of pakistan surviving one crises after another. india has also survived all these years despise having more problems then you guys. however that does not make me proud, cos i know my country could have done much better if it was not for our own people

the main problem of pakistan is taiban in my opinion. and terrosisits. thats y Pakistan ends 2010 as sick man of South Asia

.
corrupt leadership all along bro... that's what got us here...

Our problem is that a large majority of the population doesn't know its rights as a citizen of Pakistan. Fortunately this time nobody is trying to get PPP out otherwise they will get an excuse for everything. Let these 2 yrs. also pass by and then we'll see.

. . .
Pakistanis face adversity like real men: they get on with their everyday lives, instead of bickering about things. The media's skewed and negative reporting often creates some hopelessness in people, but most Pakistanis are very optimistic and try to look at the positive side in adversity. What Pakistan has had to face since its "alliance" with America on the WOT, some other country would have totally collapsed. With what Pakistan has had to go through, Pakistan has went through relatively less instability in most parts of Pakistan. Look at the Middle East right now for example. The WOT is only concentrated on specific areas. Pakistanis have weathered the 'storm' before, and are weathering it bravely right now. Pakistan has a huge youth population (people in their 30's and less), and youth brings hope and positivity.
