Pakistani government on Wednesday donated medical equipment to the Maldives in a move aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries.
The equipment was handed over to Maldivian health minister Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed by the Pakistani high commissioner to the Maldives Mohamed Saeed Khan at a special ceremony held at the president's office.
Speaking at the ceremony, which was also attended by President Mohamed Waheed Hassan, Jamsheed said the equipment would be used at the emergency room of the regional hospital in the southern island of Thinadhoo in Gaafu Dhaal Atoll. The equipment would benefit residents of neighbouring islands as well, he added.
The minister noted the assistance provided by the Pakistani government over the years in improving the Maldives healthcare system, including the training of Maldivian students in Pakistani medical colleges.
"The health sector faces many challenges that would continue in the future as well. The responsibility of the health minister and the government is to work through the challenges with the help of the facilities available," he said.
Good gesture to help Maldives.
