Pakistan Domestic 155 mm artillery gun is under test and trial : HIT

.
What are the chances that this is a licensed production? Do we have the metallurgical infrastructure in place to design and develop such weapon systems from scratch?
PA has 350+ 155mm SP in service but a handful of 155mm towed pieces
I am trying to learn here. I have always been confused that what are the advantages of towed artillery pieces over SPs? Aren't SPGs we have acquired from China (and probably license producing) mobile and mounted on truck chassis? Is mobility not good to evade counter-battery fire?

. . . .
Yes, HIT has been working on this project for quite a while now, they have attempted to make 155MM gun barrels once before, but the end product was not upto mark. However this one seems a bit more promising, I’ve seen it when it was under the works. It is a Towed 155 Gun, but it’s made in a modular enough way that if they wanted to turn it into an SP they could do so with a suitable platform (maybe they’ve already done work on that as well, though I’m not aware of it).

This may also tell why PA has been holding back on Tower Arty procurement but going ahead with SP arty testing despite having a lot of SPs in service already.

Lastly, if this gun can pass its trials and the military likes it, then it could go a long way in helping with the armies long term modernization plan (COAS recently announced specifically that they’d be modernizing the core of artillery, currently we can see that the armored core is being modernized with VT4s and AK-1s, PA has similar plans for other cores)
Is it too soon to ask for pictures? If no pictures then can you let us know which existing gun it closely resembles or what may have inspired its design?

I visited HIT a few times in 2018 and 2019 which is when this thing was under development, I saw the gun barrels as well. I doubt it has remained exactly the same from then but really the gun doesn’t “resemble“ too much, towed artillery pieces aren’t usually distinctive looking, they all look like one another.

Though if I had to explain it in some way, They took a little bit of inspiration from everything as usual, whatever they like about American, Chinese and even some Russian guns, however the best towed arty in PA service right now is American, and almost all the SP is American, so this guns borrows more from the American style (something that any SP HIT designs will do too, and so this gun will fit in there).

Americans payed a bit more effort to comfort, ergonomics and design than Chinese and Russian designers up until recently so PAs positive experience with those guns leads them in this direction.

However that was in 2019, maybe things have changed since then too, we will see the final form soon Hopefully. When the army trials it there will inevitably be design changes that they ask for to make the gun better.

As for pictures, I know someone who has them, but I doubt he or i will be allowed to share yet as he is in the armed forces (core of artillery).

MRAPs don't really fit well in a war with insurgents.

. .
A lot, more than any military in the region.

My friend MRAP is mostly a taxi designed to transport personal safely from one place to an other...
Using it as an assault vehicle especially against a trenched or regular military will b completely wrong. Unlike a third generation tank that has extensive armour camouflage and other safety plus a very accurate 120 /125 mm Canon day and night firing capability firing on move etc MRAP has none of those capabilities. A single tank in competent hands will go throw tens of MRAPs without incurring a dent....

MRAP is mostly designed as an armored transport. US uses it in conjunction of complete air cover where offensive bit is taken over by drone /heli /aircraft.

They way afghan national army used them as an offensive weapon made them a death trap....

Its not a must have and nor is a silver bullet. Its useful in certain situations and limited numbers shud b available for FC South especially. But its pretty much useless against a regular army

It has a fraction of armor and fraction of fire power compared to a tank.

Best MRAP would have 400 horse power engine compared to 1200 /1500 hp on most tanks so do the calculations

We already have a quite a few MRAPS, so what? how would buying more would address random terrorist ambush attacks?
You must be kidding me right?
Where are those "FEW MRAPS"?
most of the MRAPS we got are for base security
Some used by LCB
The majority of our men ride tin can Toyota's that don't even have a proper roll over cage & a gun mount to begin with(speaks about the sheer incompetence & corruption of the people that give go ahead to such inductions) I've seen LMGs mounted with a rope to a pipe kinda thing on top of these Toyota's
The most tactical thing about our Toyota's is the green camo & thats it
Our soldiers are god damn brave to step into these coffins on a daily basis

Thank you for the detailed reply. Now what would be the requirements for the design? To replace all 130 mms with a decent 155mm gun that can be produced in numbers easily OR have a good quality solution like m198/m777? Based on your earlier comment where a requirement to use the design in a SPH, it looks like modularity is a key requirement here so my guess is we are trying to get a higher performance gun in the class of m198 at least; an m777 is probably not possible for us. If we just wanted a simple design then China would already have solutions available. But if we have the core metallurgical capability to manufacture high quality blanks, then theoretically we should be able to design any type of howitzers based on our requirements.

Now I am only waiting for some one to curse HIT and Bajwa about “if we can manufacture Tanks and artillery then why not a simple AR like SCAR!!!”
