Close 5' 10", not blonde mixed race, kolkata 8 times and delhi 4 times, no problem in kolkata ever but problems in delhi (was with british pakistani work friend) over whether muslim were origially hindus blah blah, don't speak urdu or hindi, oh i don't give a fig whether you believe me or not.

Why would people in Delhi would ask if you are a pakstani???
There is no reason.
I don't care about your religion or if you are convert or whatever.
The question here is that Delhi is such a diverse place with every type of Indian ethnicities living here.
So why in the name of god a delhiite would question your country of origin??

Didn't ask me, the guys asked my friend after he was telling me about islamabad. Then it all started, nothing physical but heated never the less, it boiled down to his ancestors were originally hindu so therefore he was a hindu convert? Weird logic, considering he was never born to be a convert! Then it moved to name calling an other ***** words.

Now, i would just put this down to a bunch of biggots but it other incidents happened, including a taxi driver refusing to take us because the group were pakistani origin.

Lots of pakistani visits Delhi and I've never heard of any such thing in media.
Maybe it was your personal one time experience.
Maybe you were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
One or two incident doesn't mean we are anti Pakistani.
Maybe you would have visited just after the 2008 terror attack.

2007 way before, its delhi (multiple times) never any problem in kolkata, people way more friendlier an generally more intelligent. Anyway we dont need to visit india, project done an dusted.

So if you had to give me solid final suggestion, a bit of detail: I live in Dubai and I'm not one of those people who make connections fast so I need to be in a country and university that makes it easier in order to land a job, then I'd like getting a western nationality asap even though (possibly because) I want to move back soon after that. So what would you say? Also I really really appreciate your help and wish you the best of luck for you PhD.

Canada seems to be your best bet, particularly in terms of easy work permits and citizenship. UoT, UBC, Queens and even McGill are all worthwhile. Check out NUS, Singapore as well- I know a few people who studied econ there and have stayed on in Singapore permanently (they all work in investment banking though).

I'm glad I could help. Also, I finished my PhD almost 8 years ago now. I thought economics for a couple of years before moving to my current organisation.

Canada seems to be your best bet, particularly in terms of easy work permits and citizenship. UoT, UBC, Queens and even McGill are all worthwhile. Check out NUS, Singapore as well- I know a few people who studied econ there and have stayed on in Singapore permanently (they all work in investment banking though).

There is a distinction here...Pakistani's and Indian's hate the respective governments of their counterparts however when it comes to people to people contact there is lot of affinity...It's part of culture to treat guests like God and that's what the general population do...one off incident here and there can't simple write this fact off!!

punjabis might be majority in pakistan but minority in India. Specifically sikhs might see hindus as enemy (being minority) and have less of an anger towards pakistanis (84/RSS help that feeling)... and I already accepted if language is same, its much easier to be friends.
For vast majority of India, its some distant land where demons live and plan attack on us, and a pakistani will be seen with fear/anger/curiosity. Not many make difference between state and people.
