Pakistan court issues non-bailable arrest warrant against Pervez Musharraf

A Pakistani anti-terrorism court today issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former president Pervez Musharraf to secure his presence in the hearing in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case.

The court in Rawalpindi issued the warrant after hearing the arguments of prosecution lawyers.

The Federal Investigation Agency also submitted a detailed charge sheet that named Musharraf as an accused in the case related to the murder of Bhutto.

The judge subsequently adjourned the case till February 19.

The FIA had earlier this week named Musharraf as an "absconder" for failing to cooperate in the probe into the assassination.

Musharraf, currently living in self-exile in Britain, had refused to cooperate with investigators and answer their questions, prosecutors said.

The detailed charge sheet said that there was a conspiracy behind Bhutto's assassination, and that Musharraf allegedly provided slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan chief Baitullah Mehsud with the opportunity to carry out a suicide attack on Bhutto by failing to provide her adequate security.

A report compiled by the FIA's investigation team said: "Musharraf was equally responsible for facilitation and abetment of the assassination of Benazir Bhutto through his government and justified failure in providing her the requisite security protection that her status demanded twice. There was a security lapse."

The FIA has also alleged that two top former police officials, who were recently arrested for alleged negligence in providing security to Bhutto, were acting on the orders of Musharraf.

Musharraf's spokesman and legal aides have dismissed the charges levelled against him, saying the Pakistan People's Party-led government was trying to deflect attention from charges of inefficiency and corruption levelled against it.

Bhutto was killed by a suicide bomber shortly after she addressed an election rally in Rawalpindi in December 2007.

The former military ruler has been living out Pakistan since April 2009. Former Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in a US drone strike in 2009.

court has issued the order and now its up to the Gov. There is not much of a substance in the case against Musharaf and it will be hard to prove anything. He still wanted to come before the elections, why not now.

A lot of people suck up to mushy these days. I just dont understand the reason. He was exiled for a reason...anyhow, the guy is still sacred to return to his country. Funny, but kinda sad.

Musharraf will not comply with Pakistan warrant: spokesman

LONDON (AFP) – Former president Pervez Musharraf will not comply with a warrant for his arrest issued by a court in Pakistan over the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, his spokesman in London said Saturday.
"No, he won't be going back for this hearing," Fawad Chaudhry, a spokesman for Musharraf's All Pakistan Muslim League party, told AFP, adding that the warrant was "totally ridiculous."
A Pakistani anti-terrorism court earlier Saturday ordered Musharraf, who is currently in self-imposed exile in London, to appear for a hearing on February 19 over claims about the assassination of ex-premier Bhutto in 2007.

Another cheap political stunt by PPP to bring in PMLn on board. Earn Nawaz sympathy ...

this is big news all over u.s. channels.

the damn fat bastard nawaz sharif is behind this to defame Musharraf so he can't run for office.

musharraf didn't kill bhutto, zardari killed bhutto so he could be president.

i am very unhappy about this. :sniper:

Yeah, if you read carefully the 'demands' made by Nawaz Sharif to extend cooperation to PPP then you will see one of them was the 'accountability' of Musharraf. NS is not going to rest until he visits Musharraf in a prison cell and spit on Musharraf's face.
For PPP they have nothing for or against Musharraf. Benazir was killed by the same group of fanatics who also targeted Musharraf at least twice. She would have been alive had she not committed the folly of sticking her head out the sun-roof of her vehicle.

PS. Musharraf should better stay the hell away from Pakistan for life and for his very life! Pakistani power-play is just as brutal as the rampant suicide bombers there.

i will support the decision if court does the same with zerdari, taklas etc
