Yes, We went through a lot,

However,

Problems with Pakistan mainly in the last five decades Primarily were :

  • Democracy-Army Rivalry
  • Active Conflict with Arch Rival
  • 1971 Bangladesh
  • Soviet-Afghan War
  • Nuclear Power
  • Proxy elements in FATA

So, These are some of the Root problems, Which In Turn came in with a lot of Secondary Consequences such as :

  • Gov Orgs left vulnerable to foreign Anti-Pak funding orgs/nations
  • Army busy on border
  • Buildup and then again loss of power (war times)
  • Refugee crisis
  • ECONOMIC CRISIS And the Death of Self sustainable Pak
  • Sanctions
  • Relations with possible areas of military influence affected (Gulf regions)
  • All left to rot
  • Internal separatists movements by foreign elements

So the point is, If we look at the pic below,

As part of it’s foreign policy, efforts to expand its military relations and influence in the region, Pak signed defence protocols in the late 1970s with several Arab countries including KSA, Libya, Jordan, Iraq, Oman, UAE and Kuwait, Under which armed forces of these countries were imparted professional training by Pakistani advisors and military trainers.

Furthermore, The Troop presence in KSA.

So the point is, Somewhere we went really wrong, Tides changed, If we had kept on going without getting involved in other’s conflicts in our own region, We could have had foreign military bases in Different Arab countries by now and we might have provided them Nuclear Umbrella.

So @Mangus Ortus Novem , Pakistan lost its first chance to become a regional influencing power, We got a second chance in the Yemen conflict but the window was narrow for us to enter, Plus the glasses were all cony sharp.

Now, Point of this discussion is,

Whatever you guys know, Be it Political decisions, Decisions by dictators, Or maybe conflicts that halted our Progress, Bring it on here,
Was their any ambitious person in the past who ever thought of Making Pakistan an influential Military power ?

. . .
One word: Afghanistan.

There lies the solution for all our problems. Time for Pakistan to expand.

Yes, if Pakistan is to counter the region after next 50 years; with two giants, it needs to increase her geostrategic footprint. Or else just stay as a shadow. But i won't categories it as solution to all problems.

To become a superpower you have to exercise influence and economically and militarily be the strongest in your immediate neighbourhood.

All of Pakistan's neighbour's bar one (Afghanistan) have much higher Comprehensive National Power than Pakistan.

So the short answer - No.

The Pakistan in discussion here is the Pakistan during/Post Ayub, not the current one

Thank you.

Would the situation have been better then?
The gap between India and Pakistan was negligible at that time. But I am unsure of how strong Iran was.

If the answer was that simple, This thread wouldn’t exist, The primary concerns I mentioned above are the factors, Actually they were multiple factors that restricted the rise of Pakistan.

Literacy comes next in the secondary list @Syed1. , If we had strong Gov orgs, Corruption less, Things would have been in order and we might have had our share of industrialization as well as literacy rates would have been nothing like now, Would have been very high. But literacy was affected due to Afghan war as well as sold out Gov Ministries and constant rift between Military and Civilian gov.

Lol, no country other than the United States have been a 'super power' in post WWII world. Not even the Soviets were truly super power like the US was.

China will not be either.

People dont realize what differentiates a super power with a great power. Stop using this word willy nilly...

Everything before "but" and after "could have, would have" is a horseshit.

Iran of that era was in a transition phase, The inherited historical importance and influence of Iran was quickly shattering due to a change in Regime.

Nations before claiming any status first evolve Morally than Politically which translate into the Effective and Efficient form of Governance only than the Economic evolution starts, all these steps are foundation of any coherent society.

It is sad for me to say that we as Nation has not fully evolve morally and still in the very early stage of Political Evolution, therefore it is a futile attempt to claim that we had any chance in past to claim any status at global stage or would have any chance anytime soon in future, unless somehow miraculously above 3 mention evolutions occured in Pakistan simultaneously in very short period of time ....

There is always a “Regretful Conversation”, A healthy aspect of Planning ahead and Recounting old mistakes and blunders, These conversations often involve the above mentioned phrases.
