Pakistan Considering HQ-9B to Enhance Air Defence Capability

.
Yes , I said we heavy strike fighter , ,, This is what I am saying from day one and I stand with my words,,,,,,,,,,
  1. Buy and build SAMs in huge numbers Lr-SAMs , Mr-SAMs and Sr-SAMs with proper range .
  2. Upgrade Lahore and Gujranwala Corps to Mechanized Corps …. Buy and Build IFVs and AFVs in number for them.
  3. Get rid of Buakter shikan now …… Time to have fire and forget ATGM
  4. Buy 4.5++ Gen heavy , we need it for deep strike , Ideal situation will be replacing Mirages with J-16 .
  5. JF-17 is a great bird , A blessing for Pakistan ,,,, but it is a light category aircraft and relying on only one bird will be suicide , Better to have Medium bird (more F-16s if not possible buy new one J-10 , or we can replace Mirages with J-10)
Sir baktar shikhan is a very good weapon , even the Americans still use the TOW , yet all premier mechanized divisions, Commando bats, Airborne heli assault and new IFV like viper ( for shoot and scoot ) should have the long range omtas fire and forget ,
Yet normal infantry company support should have Baktar shikan as well as all defensive positions, it is easily concealable , we have huge number of it, good in bunker busting role and places like the loc, good for defending bulk infantry against armoured vehicles on foot and on vehicles, good to soften up enemy defences

Such long range systems have strategic implications. This initiative may have been prompted by the recent threat of Indian missile attack. I have been writing here for years now about a possible Brahmos missile strike. It took a palpable threat to finally jolt strategic planners awake.

Interestingly, if the range of missiles is large enough, such systems can also be used as anti-satellite systems. The S-400 can definitely do that. Let's see what options are available with HQ-9.

But most importantly, indigenous development of missiles is necessary so we can field them in numbers.

The recent events have shown the mettle of PAF's IADS, Alhamdulillah. The new HQ-9 will be a welcome addition, increasing the range of our electronic eyes, and adding range to our defence.

Finally, one of the most important areas are the naval approaches. CBGs are a real threat for us.

According to sources in Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production, the South Asian State’s armed forces are considering the acquisition of four units of HQ-9B (FD-2000) surface to air missile systems from China to enhance the country’s air defence network. The country currently relies heavily on the medium ranged HQ-16 (LY-80) system to protect its airspace, though it was long speculated that this would be followed by a purchase of a longer ranged system given the closeness of defence cooperation between the two neighbouring powers and the increasing emphasis Pakistani doctrine has placed on air defence. The HQ-9B is among the most capable long range air defence systems in the world, and was recently deployed by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to the South China Sea to safeguard the country’s territorial claims and protect outlying artificial islands.

Brother.
In the wake of powerful S-400 ,
Pakistan really need something,to combat India in current war of 2019.
Did Pakistan talked/contracted/signed any contract with China, to get,
four units of HQ-9B (FD-2000) surface to air missile systems from China ??
What did you mean 4 unitsa??

It looks like the PAF finally sees how unsustainable it is to rely on fighter aircraft for air defence. It was an absolutely flawed doctrine, the Soviet Union and China realized it decades ago, even Europe did. But because the US was in no danger of any significant numbers of enemy aircraft reaching its borders even during the peak of the cold war, they did not build a SAM network of significance. The threat to them was from long range soviet bombers and cruise missiles, and fighters were more suited for intercepting those far away from the american shores. Pakistan has been following this American doctrine untill now.

Thanks to the recent war tensions, the PAF might just have come to realize that they cannot rely on fighter aircraft to conduct air defense in a cost-effective manner. It is difficult (and expensive) to maintain fighter CAP over your entire airspace, and you simply cannot do it 24x7 for any significant duration. But the PAF was forced to do it because a lot of important installations are so close to the border that the enemy will be able to release weapons and turn away long before fighters standing on QRA can take off and reach them. The threat of an enemy pre-emptive strike on its airbases and awacs being successful was extremely high because of the limited SAM cover.

Coming to the HQ-9, IMHO, he Chinese are likely to offer the HQ-9 instead of the HQ-9B. The former is rumored to have 200km range while the latter is believed to have a 300km range. I believe the HQ-9B is the latest version they have at this time, and probably wont be offered for export. A 300km range SAM could be useful in the plains of Punjab and Sindh, but its radars would have very limited LOS when deployed elsewhere in Pakistan due to the mountainous terrain. If Pakistan was looking for a long range SAM, the HQ-9 would be the logical choice because it already has the HQ-16 and it can make use of the existing radars of Chinese origin already in service with Pakistan and possibly those used by the HQ-16 can also be shared by the two systems.

I also think that the LY-80 purchase was not a good decision. With a 40km range and only 6x missiles per TEL, it neither has enough missiles for saturation. Pakistan should instead have gone for a combination of the FM-3000 QRSAM that has a 30km range and 8x missiles per TEL and the FK-1000 CIWS which has 12x 22km range Point defense SAMs and 2x 27mm cannons.

For medium range air defence, the best option available is the Russian S-350 Vityaz system. Each TEL carries 12x 120km range 9M96 missiles and can also carry the 40km range 9M96E both of which are highly maneuvrable missiles. It is as capable as the PAC3 and can shoot down ballistic missiles (9M96) and PGMs (9M96E).

If the Russians aren't willing to sell the S-350, which is unlikely, then Pakistan can procure the Turkish under-development Siper. Problem with the Siper is that it will probably not be available before 2025. If the Chinese come up with a SAM system similar to the S-350 in range and missile load, then it could be a good choice too.

Aster-15/30 are also available since somtisome.

There needs to be additional SAM coverage in Pakistan, i think both the PAF and PA realise this now. Hopefully we can get the H9B. It is a defensive system so China should not have too many hang ups about providing the latest.

i hope this is true.

This. Time to wake up and work hard. Very hard. Invest in a foolproof security for years to come.

If possible Pak should acquire some form of ToT with the help of China. Making such SAM systems at home could help a lot.
Keep Turkey in your mind for she's keeping no stones unturned to achieve this capability using both imported and domestic systems. Couple them with indigenous long-range EW systems (based on land, air via HALE UAVs, and sea) and you can have a better 24/7 automated protection...

Can CAFRAD be used for Air base protection?

Since more than one countries are behind this Pak India Crises, therefore it is time to bring HQ-9s on priority basis.
