Pakistan Considering HQ-9B to Enhance Air Defence Capability

Pakistan must start working on an indigenous SAM. The only way to counter Rafael and SU-30 from intruding into our airspace and getting fragmented into pieces is by deploying such systems along the LOC. For instance, look at Iron Dome and David's sling, we need something similar. Not only it will give PAF some breathing space, but it will become a nightmare for IAF. Moreover, only a handful of countries possess such systems so the export market will be HUGE.

Pakistan should also work on JSOW.... I mean how India said that 3 Air planes entered in IOK then changed it to 24 planes?

Yes , I said we heavy strike fighter , ,, This is what I am saying from day one and I stand with my words,,,,,,,,,,
  1. Buy and build SAMs in huge numbers Lr-SAMs , Mr-SAMs and Sr-SAMs with proper range .
  2. Upgrade Lahore and Gujranwala Corps to Mechanized Corps …. Buy and Build IFVs and AFVs in number for them.
  3. Get rid of Buakter shikan now …… Time to have fire and forget ATGM
  4. Buy 4.5++ Gen heavy , we need it for deep strike , Ideal situation will be replacing Mirages with J-16 .
  5. JF-17 is a great bird , A blessing for Pakistan ,,,, but it is a light category aircraft and relying on only one bird will be suicide , Better to have Medium bird (more F-16s if not possible buy new one J-10 , or we can replace Mirages with J-10)

According to sources in Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production, the South Asian State’s armed forces are considering the acquisition of four units of HQ-9B (FD-2000) surface to air missile systems from China to enhance the country’s air defence network. The country currently relies heavily on the medium ranged HQ-16 (LY-80) system to protect its airspace, though it was long speculated that this would be followed by a purchase of a longer ranged system given the closeness of defence cooperation between the two neighbouring powers and the increasing emphasis Pakistani doctrine has placed on air defence. The HQ-9B is among the most capable long range air defence systems in the world, and was recently deployed by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to the South China Sea to safeguard the country’s territorial claims and protect outlying artificial islands.

The HQ-9B deploys two stage long range missiles armed with 180kg warheads, and can intercept targets at speeds of up to Mach 4.2. Missiles make use of thrust vector control, and are guided by a combination of inertial guidance, mid course uplink and active radar terminal guidance systems. The platform can reportedly engage targets at ranges over 250km - though at lower altitudes this engagement range will be considerably reduced. A more advanced derivative of the platform, the HQ-9C, is reportedly currently under development - and is expected to have capabilities comparable to the Russian S-300V4 and S-400 - both of which can intercept targets at hypersonic speeds of up to Mach 15.
Renewed Pakistani interest in the HQ-9B comes shortly after India contracted Russian S-400 missile systems to modernise its own air defence capabilities. With Islamabad likely to face considerable U.S. economic sanctions should it seek Russian or North Korean platforms for long range air defence, and with Russia nevertheless prohibited from selling platforms similar to the S-400 to Pakistan under the terms of the contract to sell the platform to India, China remains the only potential source of a high end capability in this field. The Indian S-400 is expected to be a major game changer of the balance of power near the Indian-Pakistani border - one which Pakistan plans to counter not only be developing more capable ballistic missiles capable of evading interception, but also but also by acquiring high end long range air defences of its own. Pakistan currently has no analogue to even the older S-300 currently deployed by the Indian military, and acquiring the HQ-9B will do much to create a more equal balance of power in the air. The system will form an effective complement to both the HQ-16 and the advanced Chinese PL-12 air to air missiles deployed by the Pakistani Air Force’s JF-17 Thunder combat jets, which while very light and short ranged are potentially highly capable when equipped with such high end munitions.

Thy should hve gone for tht at least 100 batteries, in 2008or 9?

Would be a departure from 70+ years of AD doctrine if we started depending on SAMs.
was a stupid doctrine to begin with. our airforce is outnumbered, and the geniuses at up top should have realized it sooner. Jets cant be everywhere, and they also cannot stop BMs and CMs.

Not necessarily. A high level SAM positioned close to the border can prompt the IAF to fly low, and in turn, reduce the effective range of some of its SOW (basically anything non-cruise missile).

Aside from a war, probably won't go across the border to interdict, but a LR-SAM can reduce the effectiveness of enemy SOW strikes. It may even push the IAF to cross the border, at which point the PAF's fighters can respond.

It’s always better late than never. Because they will receive rafales in September if I’m not mistaken, and with these birds in their hands, they will try again something stupid.

So I agree with you, but now they should speed up the procurement of long range air defence.

We need also to improve our economy, our education system in order to produce best engineers, managements in all fields.

That will help a lot in every front.

HQ-16 Surface to Air Missile Battery

With Pakistan's armed forces currently considering acquisition of the Chinese HQ-9B surface to air missile system, an analogue to the Russian S-300PMU-2, to provide some long range air defences capability, the military may be seeking adopt an approach to air defence more heavily reliant on asymmetric surface to air missile systems to counter potential attacks from the larger Air force of neighbouring India - which fields a number of high end heavy fighters such as the Su-30MKI which the Pakistani Air Force's fighter fleet may otherwise struggle to engage. Pakistan for its part currently deploys a shorter ranged analogue to the HQ-9B, the HQ-16, which provides a highly effective and versatile intermediate range defence against attacks from aircraft, ballistic or cruise missiles. The HQ-16 is speculated to have been based on the Russian BuK-M2 surface to air missile system, though it differs significantly from its Russian counterpart in terms of both capability and appearance and is considered by a number of experts to be more capable than the BuK system. Developed to protect military installations and industrial assets on the Chinese mainland, Pakistan emerged as the only export client for the highly sensitive land based system. Navalised variants of the HQ-16 - the HHQ-16 - have also been exported to Thailand onboard the Type 054 Class frigate - and these warships are currently under construction for the Pakistani Navy which will soon provide the service with its own HHQ-16 batteries.

HQ-9 Surface to Air Missile Battery


The HQ-16 makes use of vertical launch cells allowing batteries to fire from areas of dense cover including between buildings in major cities - making them far more survivable than platforms which lack such capabilities. Batteries are mounted on highly mobile 6×6 trucks, allowing them to 'shoot and scoot' to seriously improve survivability. The use of cold launch systems, similar to those used by the S-400, meanwhile reduce maintenance needs and operational costs. Each HQ-16 system consists of two radar units - an L-band passive phased array radar with an 85 km range and an S-band 3-D passive phased array radar with a 140 km range - which between them can detect up to 144 targets and simultaneously track up to 48. The system is well suited to targeting enemy combat aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles and short-medium range ballistic missiles - while longer ranged platforms such as the HQ-19 relied on to engage longer range ballistic missiles at higher altitudes. Given that Pakistan is unlikely to come under attack from long range ballistic missiles, due to its proximity to neighbouring India which places its entire territory within range of lower intermediate range missiles, the HQ-16 can be considered an adequate defence.

HQ-16 Surface to Air Missile Battery


HQ-16 batteries are reportedly deployed by Pakistan's armed forces to protect key military installations as well as parts of the capital Islamabad. Deployment near the Indian border in Kashmir however could allow them to more assertively provide for the defence of Pakistani airspace - an adequate response to recent incursions by Indian fighter aircraft conducting airstrikes on Pakistani soil. While missile systems with similarly limited ranges are potentially vulnerable to being neutralised by standoff attacks when they are not integrated into a larger air defence network alongside longer ranged platforms such as the HQ-9B or S-300, the high mobility of the HQ-16 makes it more survivable than most systems. Unlike the BuK-M2, which demonstrated a number of limitations when recently deployed by the Syrian Air Defence Forces against Israeli Air Force incursions into its airspace, HQ-16 batteries in Pakistani hands will be able to operate in a complementary role alongside the Pakistani Air Force - which will be able to respond to threats detected by the platform's advanced radar system even if they are outside the engagement range of its ground based missiles. The PL-12 and AIM-120C-5 deployed by Pakistan's JF-17 and F-16 fighter both retain ranges of over 100km, far longer than that of the HQ-16, allowing the to somewhat compensate for the absence of a complementary longer ranged surface to air missile system and work alongside air defences in a highly complementary way. This is an asset the BuK-M2 batteries of Syria have seriously lacked, with the country's Air Force having played little to no role in the defence of national airspace over the past eight years. The deployment of the HQ-16 could thus have a serious impact on the balance of power over Kashmiri skies.

4 systems means north Islamabad complex, Karachi complex, sargodha complex plus one other area , Lahore is on the border so can be defended by shorter or medium range system

Such system cover area and not necessary military area for example Moscow area is covered by one system or more

One system will cover whole Islamabad to Peshawar including kamra as this is air distance and not road distance

Now is not the time to rest on our laurels but time to strive forwards harder than ever. The enemy will continue to invest in our destruction.

We should build a huge SAM network to provide another layer of air defence.

This. Time to wake up and work hard. Very hard. Invest in a foolproof security for years to come.

If possible Pak should acquire some form of ToT with the help of China. Making such SAM systems at home could help a lot.
