Pakistan & China vow to boost strategic ties

@Dezi, in addition I would say that having a trade surplus does not necessarily mean the economy is doing well.
Japan has a trade surplus, but they have a stagnant economy. The USA has the biggest trade deficit on Earth, but they are actually doing better than Japan.
So it's a combination of factors really. Even in China, exports only make up 36% of our GDP.
Oh yeah of course trade surplus are not indicative of economic growth. Thanks for the explanation though. As you mentioned, the GDP is a complex combination of internal as well as external economic factors and has a lot to do with domestic production and consumption.
You seem to be an economic expert

But Taiwan was expected if you consider their semiconductor manufacturing prowess and all electronics would need a few chips at the least. Wonder what are the items of import that cause such a large deficit with Japan and South Korea. Are they technology and heavy industrial items?

Any insights of how Pakistan can reduce its trade deficit? I mean what are the main products imported to China from Pakistan?

Taiwan and Japan are great at manufacturing high-value products. Taiwan especially, has cornered the market on microprocessors, and has some really great brand names like Asus and HTC.

China is starting to move up the value chain however, so the deficit with Taiwan/Japan etc. will go down in the future.

As to how Pakistan can reduce its trade deficit, the best thing to do, is to export "value-added" products, rather than raw materials. Manufactured products and "Services" for example, both have a lot of value-added.

But as before, having a deficit is not a big problem if you have a lot of internal consumption. Internal consumption is a great way to drive economic growth, and it is less vulnerable to external shocks like the credit crunch.

Th thread is about Pakistan China strategic relations, that will be further strengthened in the years to come. Though US is our largest trading partner, but we would like to double our trade with China to $15 billion from $7.2 billion at the moment. Long Live Pakistan-China friendship.

A note for Indians dismantle the puppet exile Government of Tibet in India, if you want to get along with your neighbors and stop killing innocent people in Kashmir.:pakistan::cheers::china:
