Pakistan, China sign ML-1 railways agreement

BEIJING: Pakistan and China have signed an agreement for the expansion and reconstruction of existing Karachi-Lahore Peshawar (ML-1) railway track.

The document was signed by Minister for Railways Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Chinese Envoy to Pakistan Yao Jing in Beijing on Sunday.

In a statement from Beijing, Rashid said it is a great day in history of Pakistan Railways. He said under the project a double track from Peshawar to Karachi will be laid.

The minister said speed of train on new track will be 160 kilometer per hour.

According to the project details available on CPEC website, the entire track of 1,872 kms from Karachi to Peshawar would be doubled.

The speed of passenger trains would be raise from 65/110km/h to 160 km/h however, the freight trains would operate at 120 km/h.

Computer based signaling and control system will also be installed.

I hope it will bring reprieve for the millions of poor people who face a transportation nightmare on Eid holidays. Similarly, freight trains should help in better distribution of economic output. The key is providing access to the poor farmer or small time businessman. This structural inefficiency can only be removed by ending the stronghold of corrupt elite on the system.

Many projects like these only reach fruition if the Government that started them also manages to complete them in its five-year tenure.

Is there ToT involved in laying of tracks?

Also, any plans to lay track to Kabul from landi kotal or upgrade of track to zahedan Iran ?

it will be very costly project and I think railway line may be either built on loan or owned by china if they make investment so govt may be selling railway to china as part of privatization policy

I read somewhere before that the new tracks will be standard gauge compared to current broad gauge.

Are the new tracks going to be standard gauge for sure?, as this will help us to easily connect to China and Iran who I believe use standard gauge.

I would appreciate a clarification from someone who knows about ML1.
