Indeed, from the side it's not that bad. IMO the most strange item is that new tail- which looks a bit like a J-10's tail ! - but I'm sure after a few weeks no-one will complain any more (including me )

The tail's aerodynamic centre has been pushed further aft of the fuselage. This creates a longer arm for the lateral moment generated by the tail's lift, giving better directional stability. The higher swerp angle also reduces shock wave drag. I expect the transonic and supersonic performance has become better and possibly the Max speed has gone up as well.
