How can two children being betrothed be child abuse? if they chose to, they can revoke the deal after they become adults.

Why not let them chose when they're adults in the first place? You know how our society treats broken engagements, specially for girls?

But if a muslim parent decides to betroth their children with a religious ceremony conissting of signing a marriage contract, leading towards consummation of their marriage when they are much older, it is wrong? That too to help solve a family fued.
How can you seriously believe this?

I'd say those children are heroes, and those parents have foresight.

How is marrying your young child to someone gonna settle a feud ? what they are doing is pretty much "selling" their daughters the reason for betrothing them is so they can settle and be paid off this makes the marriage completely invalid ! if u have a fight you marry your 4 year old into their family ?
I know as far as islam is concerned people get married when they love someone or for security so they can have somebody to look after them (like they did in the old days) NOT to settle debts for someone else,NOT before their mature enough to understand the contract and NOT without both the bride and groom's consent which unfortunately happens in most child marriages.This is not noble at all it's wrong both legally and more importantly religiously.

darkstar, think of the problems that can occur to people in adult life if they are married off as kids. sometimes you might just end up with the wrong person and your life will be miserable.

Now, i know that this can happen in arranged marriages also, but in arranged marriages atleast the people are grown up and can make decisions for themselves. They can make their own lives.

you're right about that. I know a couple of people who married when they were 16, and have regretted it. They now say they were too immature at the time.

But my point is, that child marriage is an established tradition in south asia, especially upto half a century ago. Is it so inherently evil, as we are making it out to be?
