LAHORE, (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 28th Apr, 2019 ) :It is a good omen that Pakistan has developed capacity to manufacture 90 per cent medicines locally while only 10 per cent have to imported from abroad.
Around 1,668 drug companies have been issued licences so far, including companies preparing herbal and allopathic medicines, by the Drugs Regulatory Authority Pakistan(DRAP). Over 4,000 herbal companies had applied for registration of their products with DRAP.
This was stated by chairman, Patients Rights Forum, Dr Noor Mehar, while talking to APP here on Sunday.
He said that a large number of unregistered herbal drug companies had been operating in the country while only 4,000 bothered to apply for their enlistment and registration while mostly companies including some big firms did not apply.
DRAP issued licences to 856 herbal companies, while 812 licences had been issued to allopathic companies so far. However, many applications are pending due to shortage of staff.
Responding to a question, Dr Noor said that Pakistan is the fifth largest market of medicines in the world after China, India, USA and Brazil with volume of Rs 800 billion. He said that many herbal companies of Pakistan were also exporting herbal medicines to 155 countries with an annual earning of Rs 80 billion.
However, he said Pakistan could earn huge foreign exchange by exporting herbal medicines if the process of issuance of licences to herbal companies is made more simple and fast.
