Pakistan calls global migrant crisis most horrific, demands urgent action
Dr Maleeha points out childern among asylum seekers

NEW YORK – UN Permanent Representative of Pakistan Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi on Tuesday called for urgent action to deal with the growing crisis of forced migration.

She pointed out that half the world's refugees today were children. She was speaking as the UNICEF's Executive Board president in its second regular session. In the opening statement to the session, the Pakistan's ambassador to the UN – made an impassioned plea to the world community to live up to its responsibility to address desperate situations in which children were the principal and tragic victims.

Of these, she said, the global refugee crisis was the “most horrific”. She described this as a humanitarian catastrophe in which the suffering of children was unprecedented. She recalled that just last week the harrowing and heart breaking image of a three year old toddler lying dead on a beach after his parents’ desperate flight from conflict had reverberated across the world.

Maleeha said that this should shake the international community’s collective conscience and prompt urgent action. Describing UNICEF’s Executive Board Session as momentous, the ambassador said that this was taking place on the cusp of a historic milestone: the adoption of the United Nations post-2015 development agenda at the Sustainable Development Summit later this month.

She said that the Post-2015 agenda, with its 17 sustainable development goals and 169 targets for the year 2030, seeks to end extreme poverty, equitably promote prosperity and well-being for the world’s peoples, and protect the environment for ourselves and future generations. “It is the most ambitious human endeavor of its kind, transformative in its goals and in its envisaged implementation,” she added.

Lodhi told delegates this was “our chance to make history.” The post-2015 agenda proves to the world once again that “we, in the United Nations do more than talk.” She asserted that in crafting the post-2015 agenda member states had set aside their differences to reach consensus on a shared vision of human progress – for themselves and future generations. “We have proven that we are ready to take decisive, collaborative action to make that vision a reality,” she added.

The ambassador recalled that it had been said many times before that the poor will always be with us. “But for the first time in history this assumption is being challenged. It is being challenged through the SDGs and post-2015 agenda,” she said. She also said that this new agenda would require changing old ways of doing business and embracing innovation. “It will require reaching every child, especially the most disadvantaged and vulnerable”, she added.

Lodhi noted with concern that too many emergencies were grossly underfunded and pressed for urgent attention. She said that funding of UNICEF was not keeping pace with the demands placed on the organisation by burgeoning emergencies.

The worlds most richest countries the Saudis and their neighbours arent doing anything, moreover creating more refugees in Yemen.

Its unfortunate and sad what the refugees are going through daily. Rich countries should offer them citizenship regardless of whether they are shia or sunni.

shia cannot live is saudia but europe and west must take in all refugee since they cause the problem in first place

We are the worst sufferers of the Refugee crisis. Its time we are relived of the ungrateful burdens we have been carrying since almost 30 years.

stop spreading lies
they are doing everything
they are bombing Yemen and they are arming groups fighting Syrian regime and they are also denying the refugees from entering their rich countries .

the said rich countries are bigots and racists. there is no politically correct statement to cover this fact up. their minsters and their people say it out loud. they can invade Yemen and they can arm anyone who is against Asad but taking in the refugees is not possible for them.

I think Iran should also take in refugees. They are no way poor.
yes if Iran offers an open support and welcomes the refugees affected by war in Yemen and Syria regardless of faith, sect or race then it will be a great gesture and win it much gratitude which the GCC countries have not availed

So when is Pakistan stepping up to its own citizens abandoned in Bangladesh since 1971?

when we gather the political will and moral courage

and when will that happen?
I think it can soon but IK is a little bit busy now. you know that our Urdu speaking community will want to welcome these people but maybe for its own political gain and the Sindhi wadera is too bigoted to allow that.

you see we have millions refugees from countries from Africa and Afghanistan but some how both democratic and military governments failed to do anything about it. real shame that is.

looks like we will be hushed up by the Saudis if we start criticising the Syrian neighbours for not doing enough on refugee issue and we will be reminded about the stranded Pakistanis issue (just like you did) and that will be all. after all what is more valuable? real estate investments in UAE or these refugees?

oh I forgot to explain why I mentioned Imran Khan, he can screw the PPP and cause some trouble by briging up this matter.. He is a single minded person and I am sure if he can spare time and takes a stance then there might be a solution to that

Pakistan must live up to its own citizens first if it is to find any semblance of a moral stand on other issues. Otherwise, its selective outrage is meaningless. May be IK will resolve this long outstanding issue. May be not. In my view, he wasted his political capital. I would have begged him to take on education as his higher calling and get working on that instead of trying to getting power. IK for Education Minister would get my support.

to be fair he was on that and he has some few things already on that. sadly from both political and security point of view the things have been not easy so education took a back seat specially when 2013 elections were brought into a doubt

I know except America we all have our own skeletons in the closet so there wont be any voice from any one in fear of being reminded their own dirty laundry

Why isn't there much more global publicity about number of refugees in Pakistan? I mean i read about it in PDF every day, and it is obvious they have extracted a great cost from Pakistan both economically and in security related fields but I hardly see any articles in western media about the major role Pakistan is playing in this other humanitarian crisis of Afganishtan.

Does Pakistan get any remuneration from US and likes for refugees it has to shelter due to their actions in Afganishtan both prior to 9/11 and after that. Or for that matter from Gulf countries because as I understand they were not innocent bystanders in Afganishtan

UNHCR has offices set up in Pakistan for Afghans and kashmiris as well. there are registered and unregistered Afghans as well. since the impact is only on Pakistan so yes its not that visible when the middle east is burning.
