Excuse me. the USSR was on its last legs by 1980. Even the Indian leaders realized it in the early 1980s. Look at the number of trips made by Indian PMs to UK, France, Germany and USA in the 1980s.

Excuse me. the USSR was on its last legs by 1980. Even the Indian leaders realized it in the early 1980s. Look at the number of trips made by Indian PMs to UK, France, Germany and USA in the 1980s.

Because of Pakistan support for Afghan refugees. Had the Soviets conquered Afghanistan, they would not be so unstable. If they further managed to conquer Pakistan's resources, unlike us, they'd have made full use of it. And then the next logical step would be India

Which is why Indian dreams of US entering Pakistan are also stupid. We're literally the best buffer you could have since we don't actually attack you. A large country like US or even China being in Pakistan's place would be a huge headache for India.

some of my comments are in hindsight. I am not critical of Pakistani leadership. Then it is hard to be sympathetic

Why is India limiting themselves to a few development projects ? India has refrained from training or arming the Afghan army or police for good reason.

Because of Pakistan support for Afghan refugees. Had the Soviets conquered Afghanistan, they would not be so unstable. If they further managed to conquer Pakistan's resources, unlike us, they'd have made full use of it. And then the next logical step would be India

The main communist party CPI(M) was independent of Soviet control. The party sympathetic to USSR was CPI which is 1/10th the size of CPI(M). Pakistani communist party had 2000 members.

They are not, but they are definitely the ones who had the potential too. It's easy for all of us to sit here now, but if Russia were at any of our borders, we'd both be at risk

USSR in Afghanistan was a threat to India too. Indian leaders might not have said it in public. In private Indian diplomats were planning for various scenarios.

I see China as no threat to Pakistan. You can default on your loans and walk away. You have nukes. What can China do ?

Playing devils advocate here - but we are also probably one of the largest asylum seekers in the West too! IF 1 million Afghan refugees are in Pak then probably that many Pak refugees have enjoyed asylum in the likes of UK
