Pakistan becomes first associate member of CERN from Asia

Pakistan granted Cern’s associate membership

ISLAMABAD: The European Council for Nuclear Research (Cern) has decided to grant Pakistan the status of an associate member.

Pakistan is the first Asian country and third after Turkey and Serbia to have received the associate membership.

The decision was taken at a session of the 21-member Cern Council held in Geneva on Thursday.

“It is an acknowledgement that Pakistan is a responsible nuclear state with strong credentials in using civil nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including in the areas of power generation, agriculture and medicine,” the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

Having received Cern’s associate membership, Pakistan looks forward to benefiting from and contributing more intensively to the increasingly innovative and challenging initiatives in science and technology, it adds.

The council took the decision on the recommendation of its task force which visited Pakistan early this year. Members of the task force held talks with senior officials of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and visited various nuclear research institutions in the country. Pakistan had formally applied for an associate membership in February 2013.

The country has a two-decade long history of collaboration with Cern which began with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement in 1994.

Since then, Pakistan has carried out a number of successful projects involving a variety of technical disciplines with sophisticated technologies and precision engineering science, including the manufacture of various equipment and components of Cern’s Large Hadron Collider and associated experiments.

Keep hearing here as Pakistan is going to have a biggest achievement of her life. I think people are just congratulating each other just for the sake of congratulations......
First every conutry who is collaborator to CERN in any capacity is eligible to become "ASSOCIATE MEMBER" of CERN. Remember there is difference to be a "Member (ONLY European Union countries are members except Israel)". Associate members have no authority what so ever and there nothing one can gain extra as associate member than what you can have as a collaborator (of the CERN projects).
To be part of of CERN as an ASSOCIATE MEMBER, the country has to pay 2-3% of their GDP as annual associate member ship fee.
Only one person from Pakistan is spreading this kind roumer as this is a going to be big thing. Actually by spreading news like this to ignorant nation he is trying to get his personal benefits nothing else (probably this is all for this person's survival since he failed to achieve anything other than what PAEC had already committed before even this person joined the CERN collabration project for Pakistan). When people have no plan or program they spread this kind of roumers to make fool of people and get their personal benefits to survive.
No one will pay 2-3% of GDP of Pakistan (a country which has several other important issues than CERN).

As far as India is concerned, India has been offered this several years ago and they made a smart move of not to join as ASSOCIATE MEMBER and waste 2-3% of their GDP as annual fee for nothing. Rather they asked CERN, they will prefer to join as a "MEMBER"
So please, If some one has doubts go and read the CERN rules and even can ask this directly from the CERN officials.

Up until, 2011, Pakistan contributed in:

1. Detector construction

2. Detector simulation

3. Physics analysis

4. Grid computing

5. Computational software development

6. Manufacturing of mechanical equipment

7. Alignment of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) tracker using lasers

8. Testing of electronic equipment

9. Barrel Yoke: 35 Ton each feet made in Pakistan

10. Assembly of CF (Carbon Fiber) Fins for the Silicon Tracker’s TOB (Tracker Outer Barrel).

11. 245 of the 300 CMS chambers required were made in Islamabad.

And let's nor forget Grand Daddy Dr. Abdus Salam........... remove him from the equation and you're left with?

I don't know who told you that, but that is a complete bullshit. We are associate member of CERN, and it cost us i believe around 1-1.5 million of euros per year.

The same is for Ireland:

Cern confirmed that the cost of associate membership for Ireland was 1.5 million Swiss francs or €1.2 million. Full membership would cost about 15 million francs or about €12 million.

. . .
India should build its own 'cern'.

. .
India can't, because CERN is a multinational organization.

CERN is a particle physics laboratory. if india wants to be at forefront in particle physics research - as its plans are - i don't see any reason why india should not invest in its own research laboratories rather than depend on others' laboratories.
