College Debaters Encourage Indo - Pak School's Debate - CoolAge
The moment a person enters into debate trials for college, he/she is taught to forget debating as it were, in school. The reason given is that Matter should now be prioritized instead of Manner. In order to bridge this gap The Debating Society of India led by a Hindu College Alumna Mr. Deepak Verma and the winner of Hindu-Stephens Titans Cup Debate, decided to organize the Indo-Pak School's Debate in collaboration with the Debating Society of Pakistan. This debate called upon the fine schools from both the countries to participate. The finals, held between La- Martiniere, Calcutta and SICAS- Salamat International Campus for Advanced Studies, Lahore at Siri Fort Auditorium in Delhi on 4th April 2013, was judged by University of Delhi adjudicators namely, Tarang Tripathi and Uday Singh Rana from Hindu College and Apurv Sathe from Kirori Mal College.
When asked about the verdict, Apurv Sathe said, "It was a good debate on the topic of whether free trade between India and Pakistan will benefit India more than Pakistan, but the verdict was pretty clear in favour of SICAS by the end of it." The Hindu Judges were fairly decided on their decision too. However, on being asked regarding the initiative, they responded by saying, "There is a need to increase "Perspectivism" and such debates do exactly the same, especially amongst the young generation."
Tarang Tripathi, who also helped in the substantives of the debate held a firm view that since the school debating culture is not at its best in India even with the most premier school, there is a need to strive for better training and similar initiatives from the college debating community.
For a stepping stone, it would be worth congratulating the inception of such an endeavor and hope many more are seen in the days to come!
