Pakistan keen on signing FTA with Bangladesh

Siddique Islam

From Islamabad

Islamabad is very much interested to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Dhaka soon for strengthening bilateral trade relations between the two countries, a senior official has said.

"We need to sign the FTA as early as possible for strengthening bilateral trade and investment between two brotherly countries," Syed Hassan Javed, Additional Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, said while talking with a group of Bangladeshi journalists at foreign office in Islamabad on Monday.

Bangladesh and Pakistan earlier agreed to sign the FTA to raise the annual bilateral trade to US$1.0 billion from the existing over $350 million.

"The FTA will not only help increase export and import businesses of the both countries it would also help investment between thetwo countries," Mr. Javed said.

Dhaka and Islamabad have already started preparations to hold the next Joint Economic Commission (JEC) meeting, he said, adding that the date of ninth session of the JEC is under consultation between the two sides.

"We'll welcome Bangladeshi banks to open their new branches in Pakistan that would help foreign trade between the two countries grow," he said while reply to a query.

The volume of bilateral trade between the two countries has been quite 'insignificant' for years because of the lack of proper initiatives.

The balance of trade, according to official data, has remained in favour of Pakistan over the past 19 years.

Bangladesh exported goods and commodities worth only US$76.21 million to Pakistan in fiscal year 2008-09 while Pakistan exported worth $288.38 million in the same period to Bangladesh.

Pakistani businessmen seek direct shipping link with Bangladesh

Monday, 11 May 2009

A Pakistani trade delegation has urged Bangladesh to help introduce direct shipping link to boost bilateral trade between the two countries. A six-member trade delegation team of All Pakistan Bed-sheets and Upholstery Manufacturers’ Association (APBUMA) gave the plea when it met Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) president Zafar Osman at his office, a DCCI announcement said Saturday. They discussed development of bilateral trade.

The DCCI President said that there were many opportunities to develop bilateral trade relations between the two countries and “we should utilise these opportunities.”

Zafar Osman stressed on quality production and diversification of goods in the export sectors. He also recommended setting up of joint venture industries in Bangladesh with Pakistan to get quota free access given by European Union, Canada and other countries.

Zafar Osman urged the Pakistani businessmen to come forward to make investment in Chittagong Export Processing Zone (CEPZ) and World Trade Centre in the southeastern port city.

Head of the Pakistani trade delegation S Mohammad Aasim stressed on taking initiative for direct export facility through sea-route.
The delegation expressed their interest on investment in Bangladesh, says a press release.

DCCI Vice President Md. Sirajuddin Malik and DCCI Directors were also present during the meeting.

DCCI sources said, the trade between the two countries has increased about 20 percent in recent times and ways are now being discussed to establish a direct Karachi-Chittagong shipping link in near future.

Presently, 50 Pakistani companies have an investment of US$ 90 million in Bangladesh.

You yourself are the only polluter of most of the BD-related threads. Now, you are acting childish by requesting moderators not to allow Indians in this sacred thread. This is an open forum and all the posters have equal rights to participate.

By the way, if your claim is true that you are a citizen of Bangladesh, then you should have titled the thread as "Bangladesh-Pakistan FTA."

Sorry to disappoint but mods do use their brain here....

On a side note FTA between any Asian countries is a great move....I am not sure of the land route is viable here but in case it is cheaper than sea then both the countries should explore option of seeking that option with India.....

IMO there should be FTA between South Asian countries and land routes should be open across....Anyways i am just an evil indian so leaving the thread for you to have fun....

"We'll welcome Bangladeshi banks to open their new branches in Pakistan that would help foreign trade between the two countries grow"
That is a very good sign....the only Bangladeshi Bank that has numerous branches abroad is Janata Bank....my dad has been a manager of one of them before....i have seen these branches send a huge amount of profits back to Bangladesh annually....Bengalis, especially ones who cannot afford private banks rush here to send remittance home as the government has subsidized its cost a lot, anyone now can afford loans....charges for operating an account is also less.....

I am sure, there are many Bangladeshis in Pakistan who can benefit if our own banks can open up there....and commercially, it will get a lot of revenue.....on other note, our banking industry can develop....

Cheers!!!

I will be great if Pakistan , India and Bangladesh along with all South Asian nations can form a real free trade economic area just like the EU. This will benefit all the people of South Asia except the right wing politicians who benefit from politics of hatred.
