Pakistan, Australia to enhance defense cooperation


ISLAMABAD: Air Marshal Mark D Binskin, Chief of Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force, visited Air Headquarters, Islamabad and called on Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman, Chief of the Air Staff, Pakistan Air Force and Naval Chief Admiral Noman Bashir separately.

The Australian Air Chief met with Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman and remained together for some time and discussed matters of professional interest.

Later, Air Marshal Mark D Binskin and Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman visited flood affected areas of Multan and Kot Adu.

Detailed briefing regarding flood relief operations was given to dignitaries at Multan.

Air Marshal Mark D Binskin and Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman also visited a 40 bed Mobile Hospital set up by Australian Air Force at Kot Adu. Lt Gen Shafqaat, Corps Commander Multan is also with the dignitaries.

Meanwhile Australian Air Chief also met with Naval Chief Admiral Noman Bashir and agreed on enhancing bilateral relations, defense relations and relations between the two navies. According to sources Pakistan and Australia agreed to enhance cooperation in defense and military sectors.

it will be good from pakistan to expand its defence ties beyond china and US.
its not always about military hardware that determines your strategic patnership with other friendly countries but the experience and exposure one can have with joint military exercises, dialouges and trainings is equally important.

Pak, Australia to expand defence cooperation
Islamabad, 24 Nov 10—Pakistan and Australia on Wednesday agreed to further the existing bilateral cooperation in various fields particularly in the area of defence.

This was agreed at a meeting between Secretary Defence, Lt General Syed Athar Ali (Retd), and Australian Defence delegation, led by Australian Assistant Secretary for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Dr. Sheridan Kearnan, that called on him in the Ministry of Defence.

The meeting emphasised to enhance interaction between the Armed Forces of the two countries, besides exchanging of high level delegations.

The Secretary briefed the visiting delegation about Pakistan’s counter- terror efforts and the achievement made in this regard.

He said that Pakistan’s counter-insurgency contribution spoke volume of its commitment to uproot extremism and terrorism.

He said that the International Community required enhancing Pakistan’s anti-terror capacity and actively assisting it in its efforts to eradicate terrorism.

The Secretary was highly appreciative of the monumental contribution

and assistance provided by the Australian Government during October 2005 earthquake, the re-settlement of the Internally Displaced Persons and the recent devastating floods.

Dr. Sheridan Kearnan informed the Secretary that his country attached greater importance to ties with Pakistan and wanted to further expand and increase bilateral cooperation.

Lauding Pakistan’s anti-terror efforts, she said that Pakistan had made remarkable contribution against the war on terror.

She said that Pakistan’s role bears critical importance for defeating terrorism and bringing sustainable peace and stability to the region.

She termed the 2nd Pakistan Australia Defence Cooperation Coordination Committee Meeting held at Joint Staff Headquarters (JSHQ) from 22-24 November as highly productive, saying it would further promote and strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.

Dr. Sheridan Kearnan said that Australia would continue to provide additional assistance for the rehabilitation of flood-stricken people of Pakistan. —APP

it is good that australia has set up 40 bed hospital for flood victims in pakistan. those guys need all the help which can be given. i hope indian government is listening.

australia is trying to gain a foothold in indian ocean. that is why they r tying up with india and pakistan.

What do you mean a foothold in the Indian Ocean? Our country being in the Indian Ocean already means we have a foot hold in it :P

may be wrong choice of words mate. wat i was trying to convey was that australia is trying to increase its sphere of influence in indian ocean.
