Washington: Pakistan has piled the pressure on the US administration to mediate on the Kashmir issue, ahead of a crucial visit by President Barack Obama to India.

Speaking at the Brookings Institute here, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said US mediation is essential for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.

“Pakistan is deeply interested in a peaceful and stable South Asia,” Qureshi said.

Qureshi spoke about the recent unrest in Jammu and Kashmir and said "any person of conscience cannot ignore the use of brute force against defenceless Kashmiri youth."

“That prospect is endangered by the recent events in Kashmir. It is in the interest of lasting peace, stability and development of the region that the US works for the resolution of disputes in South Asia. This has to begin with justice for the Kashmiri people," he said.

His comments came hours after the third round of the Strategic Dialogue between the US and Pakistan began.

Contending that Pakistan is "deeply interested" in a peaceful and stable South Asia, Qureshi claimed that the prospect, however, "is in danger again by the recent events in Kashmir."

"Any person of conscience cannot ignore the use of brute force against defense les Kashmiri youth. In this unfolding tragedy over 100 Kashmiris have lost their lives in the past three months, many of them teenagers," he said.

"Their mothers are rightly bewildered at the deafening silence of the international community. Wisdom proposes that the aspirations of any people can't be suppressed by the use of force, such would be with the legitimate rights of the Kashmiri people," Qureshi said.

The Pakistani Foreign Minister's comments have come despite US' repeated assertion that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and it has to be solved by the two countries.

In response to another question, Qureshi said Pakistan wants good neighbourly ties with India.

"Pakistan wants a very good neighborly relationship with India. What we are saying is we have outstanding issues. Both sides have agreed that dialogue is the only sensible way forward," he said.

He said the Composite Dialogue process has "shown results, incremental progress has been achieved and we need to pursue that and yes why not, I think, it makes a lot of sense that we improve relations, that we have good normal healthy relations."

Both India and Pakistan stands to gain from good normal healthy relationship, Qureshi said, adding that the region stands to gain from improved Indo-Pak ties.

"One thing, we are certain that both realize we do not need to use it," Qureshi said in response to a question.

US-Pakistan partnership has profound consequences not only for our two nations but for international peace and security. With PTI inputs.

I do not get, why he keep asking for the mediation in kashmir and civil nuclear deal at par with india to US, thousand times it has been rejected by US.

I'll give you two similar questions to ask too!!

Why US keeps asking us to start an operation in N.Waziristan when we have clearly rejected a 1000 times!!

And why does India still tries to hold on Kashmir when people there have rejected India a Million times !!!

.
Obama promised change lets see if that change comes.

Lol, you believe in Politician's promises? Btw, IIRC that change was for the US not anyone else.

.
something better should be done on Kashmir issue
its been a long time
.
Pakistan wants solution so thats why keep on asking US to settle this

I remeber one famous line my boss told to someone.
You asked me once, I said no.
You asked me again, I said no.
Keep asking thousand times, the answer will still be no.

In the interest of promoting the economic and civil progress of both India and Pakistan, the USA should offer to host mediation talks between Pakistan and India. However, I think that the talks should also settle any disputes with China at the same time. So perhaps the USA should try to organize a tri-party conference of China, India and Pakistan to discuss and settle all border issues, with the mechanism being a plebiscite held by the UN under UN Security Council authority. What does India have to fear from a free, open and honest plebiscite of the citizens in each of the "disputed" territories?

wow that is good way of settling dispute. instigate feelings of local by constantly feeding them anti India stuff and then conduct plebiscite.

Not working with us for sure.

It fears loss of Kashmir valley.

Exactly. it does not work in our interest and anything which does not work in our interest is not acceptable to us.

We want total and undisputed control over Kashmir's waters. It's all about the waters for both us and the Pakistanis.

All this blah blah about human rights and all is nothing but escapist trash engineered to cloud the minds of those select few who are unwilling to see beyond rhetoric.

Let me hazard a guess. The answer is same to both. Because USA and India can and have been successful in doing so..

On the other hand, Pakistan has been pretty unsuccessful in what it has been trying to do..

Who gave authority to US to police the world and resolve conflicts? I beleive UN was supposed to do that and the recent statement from UN was clear - "You guys[Ind and Pak] resolve among yourself".

Note that the way US is perceived in India is totally different from that of Pakistan. India isnt dependant on US on any front and all ties are going to be bilateral. Which would mean that even US would tread a cautious path, not to hurt India in any way. If not, the loss is going to be on both sides.

You would see that Obama in his visit would avoid Kashmir issue and if at all brought in, would sing the 'bilateral resolution' :-)
