ISLAMABAD — A Pakistan Army Mi-17 Hip transport helicopter crashed July 11, killing five people.

According to the military’s Inter Services Public Relations, the helicopter crashed at Skardu Airport in the mountainous Gilgit-Baltistan region in the north of the country. In addition to the five dead, three others on board were injured.

No cause has been ascertained.

The Mi-17 is the Army’s most capable and versatile transport helicopter, and has proved to be highly adept at handling all but the highest of peaks in the more mountainous regions of the country. It has been crucial in providing rotary airlift for ground troops in operations against the Taliban in places like Swat and South Waziristan.

Brian Cloughley, a former Australian defense attaché to Islamabad, said, “The loss of any helicopter is a most serious matter for Pakistan. The entire fleet of some 400 is stretched, and the [internal security] situation in the west of the country is most demanding on rotary hours, with the Aviation Corps finding it increasingly taxing to effect maintenance.”

The age of the helicopter fleet is a growing issue, he said.

“There has been no compromise in servicing, of course, but given the age of much of the fleet, there is a problem in keeping them flying in the numbers necessary to meet operational requirements,” he said.

“The Pumas and Mi-17s are a most important link in the logistics chain in the rugged terrain of the north and west, and replacement of even one of them will be difficult,” he said.

Pakistan’s military has sought more utility and gunship helicopters to replace those that are increasingly worn out through the high operational tempo they are forced to maintain. It has sought surplus helicopters as aid, and also examined the option of purchasing heavy-lift helos such as ex-Italian CH-47 Chinooks, or AH-64 Apache or AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter variants from the U.S.

Due to politics and the severe financial situation in the country resulting from its mismanaged economy, however, these plans have not materialized, and Pakistan has been left with an aging rotary fleet.

USA needs to finance the Mi fleet, without the adequate helis, Pakistan simply cannot DO MORE.

Perhaps we could include a clause to service the fleet in the contract to provide the Helis to AF.

Well Mi-17 are rugged Helis and quite cheap too

I bet if supreme court of Pakistan Manages to get Zardari's Swiss accounts open , you can easily Purchase 100 Mi17 from Russia , without aid

By the Way , US should provide some of its surplus Mi17 to pak army once it leaves afghanistan

Even India is inducting 139 Mi17V5s at the cost of 2 Billion USD to replace some 80 Mi-8 and 20 older Mi17

What happened to the $8.6 billion that the US of A has given Pakistan as Coalition Support Funds since 2001?

Western officials have claimed nearly 70% of this aid given to the military has been misspent in 2002-2007 and used to cover the civilian deficit.

Why has this been allowed to happen when the CSF is to be used not for covering budget deficits but used for military expenditure? However, Musharraf himself had mentioned in a candid interview on a foreign news channel that much of the money received as CSF has been used to buy arms and equipment not only for COIN ops against the terrorists but against India as it was a bigger threat than the TTP etc.

Well, you've got only yourselves to blame for the predicament you are in. Why should Coalition Support Funds be used to cover civilian budget deficits and to procure weapon platforms to be used against India? And most of these weapon systems have probably been mothballed and kept ready against what the PA calls India's 'Cold Start Doctrine'.

That doctrine has been shelved anyway, as a non starter! :cheesy:

dont be an idiot..
what do u think is the cost of deplyoing 80,000 troops on barders for 10 years...?
is it 1 trillion like for US nope its only 8 billion dollars that US paid..and lets not forget by doing so it safed billions of dollars by getting FREE transit!!!
the american acknowledge that they saved atleast 100 million per month during these days forget about the costs when they were deploying troops, i bet they have by now saved atleast 20 billion dollars just in transit

Pakistan Army helicopters are old & they need to be replaced, old Puma heli. is still under service with Pak Army. Pak Army is having a option & they can buy Military hardware from China including helicopters but I don't know why they are not doing anything to buy new hardware.
