Pakistan Army Chief Kayani visits Sri Lanka: Breaking News

Pakistani Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is due to undertake a three day visit to Sri Lanka starting from 27th of this month.

This will be his second visit as he previously visited Sri Lanka in January 2011.

During his stay in Sri Lanka, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will meet the top military leadership of the country. He will also hold discussions on matters of professional interests with Sri Lanka Defence Secretary, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

General Kayani will review the Passing out Parade at Sri Lanka Military Academy, Diyatalawa on 28th June 2013 as the Chief Guest.

The visit of Pakistan's Army Chief will provide both sides an opportunity to review ongoing cooperation and collaboration, and to discuss ways to further broaden and deepen this relationship.

A get together of Pakistan Staff College and National Defence University's qualified officers is being arranged during the visit of General Kayani to provide opportunity to the Sri Lankan alumni of these prestigious Pakistani Institutions to interact with Pakistan's Army Chief.

General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani is Pakistan's 14th Army Chief and is noted for his patience, diligence, intelligence and determination. He was commissioned in an Infantry Battalion on 29 August 1971 and joined the famed Baloch Regiment. He has been holding the appointment of the Chief of Army Staff since November 2007.

Since independence, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have consistently maintained close, cordial and mutually supportive relations especially in the field of defense. This relationship is likely to grow in coming years.

Sri Lanka seeks more military training opportunities from Pakistan

Fri, Jun 28, 2013

During a meeting with the visiting Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Sri Lanka's Army Commander General Jagath Jayasuriya discussed exploring avenues of receiving more training opportunities for Sri Lankan military officers in Pakistan.

Participation in Sri Lanka Army's Defence Seminar, higher education programs in both countries and Sri Lanka's military exercise 'cormorant', were among other matters that were taken up during the discussions.

The two generals further discussed military matters of mutual and training interest and possibilities for further enhancing bonds of goodwill and cooperation, the Army said.

The discussions with the Pakistan military come in the wake of Sri Lanka's Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa recalling two military officers from a training program in India due to protests against training Sri Lankan military officers in Tamil Nadu state of India.

General Kayani, who arrived in Sri Lanka Thursday on a three-day official visit, also met the Secretary of Defense and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa along with Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), Commanders of the Army, Navy, and Air Force at the Ministry of Defense, in Colombo.

General Kayani will leave to Diyatalawa this evening to attend the final presentation by the graduating class of the Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Military Academy on the topic ' The path to sustainable peace in post war Sri Lanka through Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Reconstruction'.
