Pakistan and Sweden vow to strengthen ties
* Defence minister tells Swedish envoy Pak-India tensions will only benefit terrorists
Staff Report
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Sweden on Friday expressed the desire to enhance bilateral cooperation in various fields, particularly in the area of defence.
This was agreed at a meeting between Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar and Swedish Ambassador Anna Karin Enestrom who called on him at the Defence Ministry. The two officials exchanged views on a number of subjects including defence cooperation, the ongoing tension between Pakistan and India and the counter-terrorism measures taken by Islamabad.
The minister told the envoy that Pakistan wanted to have cordial ties with all its neighbouring countries including India, which was essential for promoting peace and stability in the region. Mukhtar said the ongoing tension between Islamabad and New Delhi would only benefit terrorists and non-state actors who wanted to whip up tensions and destabilise the region. He said war was not in the interest of either country and both should understand each other and build up an atmosphere of trust. He told the ambassador that Islamabad was equally concerned over the Mumbai attacks and had offered to cooperate with New Delhi to bring the perpetrators to justice. He said India should understand Pakistans position, which was itself a victim of terrorism.
He said terrorism was posing a grave threat to world peace and stability and it was the obligation of the world community to actively assist Pakistan in its efforts to combat the menace. The envoy said both Pakistan and India should come closer and promote better cooperation. Enestrom voiced concern over the prevailing tension between the two sides. She also reiterated the strong support of her government and that of the European Union for the present democratic system in Pakistan. The envoy also underscored the need for promoting closer cooperation between Pakistan and Sweden, particularly in the field of defence.
