Pakistan Afghanistan border fence update

Mindboggling. This was need of the hour. This is how you take pro-active action. A big lesson for everyone. Not mere words, but concrete action. Generations upon generations are going to reap the benefits.

Fencing

In September 2005, Pakistan stated it had plans to build a 2,400-kilometre (1,500 mi) fence along its border with Afghanistan to prevent insurgents and drug smugglers slipping between the two countries. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf had subsequently offered to mine the border as well.

The plans to fence and mine the border were again considered in 2007 and then in 2009, but they were not fully implemented. However, a 35-kilometre-long (22 mi) portion along selected border areas was fenced and the work was discontinued for lack of funds. In June 2011, Major General Athar Abbas, the then spokesman for the army, said: "We did fence around 35km of the border area as it faced continuous militant incursions. It was a joint project of ISAF and Afghanistan. But then they backed out.

It was a very costly project." During the Musharraf period, a biometric system was installed by Pakistan on border crossings. Afghanistan had objected to the system. The bio-metric system remains intact at the border, although it is yet to be made fully functional.

The Pakistan Army has revealed today that 83% of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border has been completely fenced and work is ongoing on complete fencing by mid-2021. Work on the fence began in 2017 with a $500 million price tag.

The entire border will be double-fenced with 3 meter tall chain-link fences separated by barbed wire. The 2,600 kilometre long fence will cut through snow capped mountain peaks in the north to valleys and plains in the south.

Furthermore, ISPR also revealed that 30% of the 900 kilometre long Pakistan-Iran border has also been similarly fenced and work will complete by late 2021.

Both borders will be surveilled by hundreds of colour and thermal-imaging cameras as well as armed reconnaissance drones and will also feature hundreds of major and minor border forts manned by Pakistani forces.

This porous border should have been fenced a very long time ago, I suppose it should have cut down cross border smuggling to some extent, illegal immigration, spies roaming around freely and suicide bombers who have caused big mayhem in Pakistan, but good to see progress is being made.

This was the need of the hour and not fencing have cost us dearly but still if and when its completed will be a life saver for Pakistan. We need a small road beside the fence too so our soldiers can move quickly when needs arises. If we manage and look after the fence/border properly it will be like another Basha dam for us and save Pakistan from the future dark forces.

Guess they're preparing for the upcoming civil war between Taliban and NA.
That or Kabul/Delhi funded militants trying to cross into Pakistan. Either way they are getting ready for any SHTF scenario. May 2021 is coming fast; when the Feb 2020 deal specifies foreign forces to pull out, which doesn’t see likely

building walls and hiding has not proved very successful in the past. History: Romans lost. Chinese were conquered.

paid soldiers are only a viable option when the gov't has wealth to steal from free people. What will the soldiers be paid when the currencies and economies go pop?
Afghans fight for something other than money
US citizens will also fight for something other than money.
