Pakistan: 100 per cent rise in mental disorders over a decade

By Mukhtar Alam

KARACHI, Oct 8: There has been an almost 100 per cent rise in the incidence of mental disorders, particularly stress and depression, in the country over the past 10 years, mainly due to the issues of personal insecurity, poverty, lack of education, rising inflation and ramshackle power supply, said senior psychiatrists on Saturday.

Speaking at a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, they said apart from genetic reasons, rising targeted killings, extortion, bodies found stuffed in gunny bags and frequent power breakdowns during the last couple of years had aggravated significantly the stress level in Pakistani society.

Leading the press conference, which was called in connection with the World Mental Health Day that falls on Oct 10, the president of the Pakistan Association for Mental Health (PAMH), Dr S. Haroon Ahmed, said that the global as well as local statistics related to mental health suggested development of mental healthcare facilities, ensuring an enabling environment for the citizens.

In Pakistan, there were four mental health hospitals in Hyderabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Mansehra with a total capacity of 3,000 beds, while small psychiatric units were attached to teaching hospitals and private psychiatric hospitals had a capacity of about 4,000 beds for patients reporting with mental disorders, he said. He lamented that there were only 419 psychiatrists in the country, concentrated mostly in urban areas, while there were no trained psychiatric nurses and community mental health workers. There had been a longstanding demand for a meaningful investment in the mental health sector, development of workforce and infrastructure, he said.

He said Pakistan also needed to invest to make the people aware of the prevalence of mental disorders and their impact on national productivity, creativity, entrepreneurship and personal development.

He said that the rate of stress and mental illness had increased the task of health policymakers, doctors and medical workers in their efforts, if any, towards mental approach, which were vital for a healthy society.

“We, under the banner of PAMH, have been contributing towards the redress of the problems of mental health in the country for the past 30 years, but have failed to get government support to establish a fully-fledged centre, which could have local need based programmes in the field of behavioral sciences and evolve community oriented, cost effective and culturally relevant programmes of treatment and aftercare of mentally ill patients.,” he added.

Dr M. Naim Siddiqui, the PAMH general secretary, said that the vulnerable people who were not able to manage their stress in a fast-changing world needed special attention.

Dr Badar Sabir Ali said that the prevalence of mental health disorder had increased immensely in Pakistan (30-60 per cent) and there was a dearth of trained physiatrists.

She further said that the WHO had estimated that depression was to reach the second position of disability adjusted life years lost and would be the second largest killer after the heart disease.

Dr Salamat Kamal announced that the PAMH was observing the Mental Health Day by holding a day-long seminar on Sunday at the PMA House.

It is natural. People suffering so much from the disastrous decisions the Pak military has taken since its inception. Pakistanis have no one to blame but their generals (and some civilian politicians).

Counselling system is not common in this part of the world..In-fact if some one says he is going to see a psychiatrist..Ppl will either laugh or give them a weird look..

These almost sound like kind caring words, except when someone uses a bad situation as an opportunity to pursue their own agenda you realise there is no kind sentiment behind the words, just a ruthless desire to further their own agenda.

The generals are responsible for social well being and NOT the govt? Ha, you are too transparent, maybe if there was no war in terror headache, no bleeding of the economy, no daily violence and drones people would be better off, but no it's the generals who are responsible for this ill??

Pakistan suffers from all the ills under the sun, hence the suffering.....one wonders, where did supa dupa power went wrong.

New Delhi: Around 20 per cent of all the patients seen by primary healthcare doctors in India have mental disorders, showed an analysis of government data. The analysis showed that one in four families is likely to have at least one member with a behavioural or mental disorder.

People belonging to urban sector and women were found to have a high prevalence of mental disorders, showed a study by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.

Those who belong to lower socioeconomic status and nuclear families and those who are married, widowers or divorced also showed higher rates of psychological problems. People in the age group of 35-44 years are also highly prone to mental disorders.

Around 12 per cent of the global burden of mental disorders came from India in 2000 and is expected to rise to 15 per cent in 2020, according to the World Health Report-2001.

Estimates of National Family Health survey has hinted that around 15 million people in India suffer from severe mental disorders and almost 30 million from mild or moderate psychiatric problems.

To address these problems the government has launched National Mental Health Programme in 1996 in four districts as a pilot project.

Today the programme covers 123 districts under the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP) and has been expanded to include the up-gradation of psychiatry departments of Government Medical Colleges, general hospitals and modernisation of State run Mental Hospitals. Under the scheme 89 psychiatry departments have been upgraded and 29 mental hospitals modernized.

20 pc patients in primary healthcares suffer from mental disorders in India - 20 pc patients in primary healthcares suffer fr..

blaming militancy would only be a part of the equation.(and by the way unlike what you hear on the news we are not freaking Somalia or something. 180 million ppl live in this country and i bet that not even a million live under militant rule though even that number is a shame)

Everything else definitely contributes far more.

Since you are oblivious of your own symptoms. Mr. Perfect. !!

Brother

I have been reliably informed today at the Pharmacy show that mental disorder results in people laughing at their own jokes, especially when they are sh*t. I think nelson is suffering badly.
Pakistan 100% mental disorder stats were gathered by an Indian that was laughing at his own jokes. Maybe it was nelson?

its very sad that this nelson chap chooses to make fun of someones illness. Their are more people in india suffering various forms of malnutrition and other illnesses but I would not see that as a reason to make a cheap remarks about indians. In fact if i met an ill indian I would try to assist. We may have differing viewpoints but Nelson should learn that we are all human beings first and firstmost.

On topic when we are talking about an increase we should look at where the situation was before and often stats can be massaged.

My dear, I may be privileged, but I don't/would never see my self as a better human as those who are not so lucky.
This is what my religion and humanity teaches me.....however when some of these characters try to show that their evil is better than ours.... a likewise reply has to be in place. No doubt we have our share of problems but it's not hopeless.
